Marie Evelyn Holmes, in her 96th year, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. Pre-deceased in 2019 by Kenneth (‘Bubba’) Holmes, Marie’s devoted husband of 67 years. Marie was born in Ashfield, Ontario, attended high school in Goderich, Ontario then moved to London, Ontario where she entered training at Victoria Hospital and began her career as an RN. Marie met Ken while in training. They married in 1952 and lived in London until 1972 then moved to Toronto’s east end with their young family and later retired to Henderson Place in Ajax where they enjoyed many years of independent living and great friendships.
Kindness and a focus on friends and family defined Marie’s life. Her warmth and generosity of spirit were felt by many.
Marie is survived by her children Marsha Kennedy, Janet Finucan and Dean Holmes and their partners, David Kennedy, Mike Finucan and Jessie Gu. Grandchildren include Lisa and Christopher Kennedy, Ryan, Connor, Gregory Jennifer Finucan and Paris Holmes as well as a whole new generation of great-grandchildren, Emma, Nicky, Danny, Peyton, Isla, Riley, Zoey and Indie who all loved their ‘Super Nana’. Not a special occasion passed without a card and best wishes from Nana.
Marie enjoyed a long and loving relationship with her only surviving sibling, Elaine Pinder and her three children.
Among other interests Marie was an avid and skilled gardener, memoir writer and enjoyed cottage visits, reading the Toronto Star start to finish and following her Blue Jays. These activities kept Marie busy after retiring from a long nursing career ending at Scarborough General Hospital.
Thanks to staff at Lakeridge Health Ajax Pickering Hospital for their kind assistance in recent weeks. Cremation to be followed by private internment.
