Our beloved Maggie passed away after a very brief battle with cancer to be with her Saviour. She passed in the loving and professional care of the Palliative Care Unit at the Oshawa Hospital on Thursday January 28th, 2021 aged 93 years.
She is predeceased by her loving husband John and by her parents Joseph and Hannah as well as each of her siblings; Lottie (Steve), William(Cathy), Joseph(Margaret) and Helen(Bill). She is survived by her son; Dr Steven Caldwell and daughter-in-law Marion as well as her Grandchildren; Ewan and Tessa. Also remaining are several nieces & nephews including Anne (David), Katrina (Nathan) and Graham (Joan).
Maggie was born in Glasgow, Scotland were she also met the love of her life; John. They were married in 1955 and emigrated to Canada for a better life in 1958 making Toronto their home for more than 60 years. Maggie joined John in all of their endeavours in the Scarborough theatre scene for those early days and was instrumental in the founding, with John, of the Scarboro Players. She was an actress, a costume designer, make-up artist and script girl. She was the most anticipated host for all of the lavish after-production parties.
After raising her son, she returned to professional life, joining the Toronto Dominion Bank family at Lawrence & McCowan where she remained a dedicated employee until well past retirement age. Her selflessness was apparent during this time as she became the family breadwinner, supporting John through illness and making possible the professional aspirations of her son Steven to become an accomplished Physician.
Although on her own after the death of her beloved John, she was never alone. Grandchildren arrived in 2005 and she was a frequent pilgrim to Edmonton for birthdays, Christmas and summer vacations. Only failing health in her latter years prevented travel but she always remained in touch with loving kindness.
Her faith was her most important source of strength and never wavered. She attended weekly well in to her 90’s and the Family owes very special thanks to her extended church family from Heron Park Baptist Church in the early days, through Scarborough Gospel Temple to her most recent sanctuary; Safe Haven. The families most special thanks go out to Pat & John Raymer, Donna Welham and especially Maria and Jozef Javor. Maggie’s life was richly enhanced and immeasurably supported by the loving and selfless care they provided. Special thanks also to Ms. Olivia Feather for her years of love and kindness
Special thanks go out to the staff of Chartwell Pickering City Centre where Maggie spent her last 6 years. The care and professionalism provided was beyond compare and especially appreciated. Sincere thanks also to the Physicians, Nurses and staff who cared for Maggie and supported our Family in her final days at Ajax Pickering Hospital and at the Palliative Care Unit, Oshawa Hospital.
Burial will take place for a small group of Family on Saturday, February 6th 2021. A Celebration of Life will be arranged at a time when all may be able to gather in her memory.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.giffenmackscarborough.com for the CALDWELL family.
