Marilyn was born in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, the oldest daughter of John and Ruth (Reichert) Gross. After graduating from Gering High School, she enlisted in the US Navy and was stationed in the Great Lakes, Illinois where she met her future husband, Rich. Shortly after, they married and moved to Charleston, South Carolina where Rich was deployed out to sea and Marilyn started her career in finance. When Rich was discharged from the US Navy in 1961, they moved back to Gering, Nebraska to be close to Marilyn’s parents. Four years later, they welcomed the birth of their adored daughter, Rachelle. In the fall of 1984, Marilyn and her family moved to Cape Cod settling in Harwich where they built their family home. She continued her finance career at Cape Cod 5 Operations Center in Orleans where she worked for several years before her retirement.
Marilyn was a parishioner of Holy Trinity Church. She enjoyed walking on the beach and ceramic making with her friends. Everyone who knew Marilyn, knew she was a people person, she was also very family oriented. However, Marilyn’s true pride and joy was her grandson, Cody.
Marilyn is predeceased by her parents John and Ruth (Reichert) Gross, her adored daughter, Rachelle A. Sonnabend and her sisters Sharon Hamernik and Elaine Hayes. In addition to her loving husband Rich, she is survived by her cherished grandson Cody Sonnabend, her dear sister Beverly Schaub and her husband Tom of Florida and her brother-in-law Bill Hamernik of Nebraska.
A funeral mass will be celebrated 11 AM Thursday, December 12, 2024, at Holy Trinity Church in West Harwich followed by committal service at the Holy Trinity Memorial Wall.
Marilyn was very grateful for the nurses and doctors at the VA Clinic in Hyannis. Memorial donations may be made in her name to Hyannis VA Clinic, 233 Stevens St., Hyannis, MA 02601.
