Janice Mary (Monahan) Concannon, resident of Harwich Port and formerly of Braintree, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family at McCarthy Care Center in Sandwich on November 6, 2024 at the age of 86. Jan was the daughter of Edward Monahan and Theresa (Dooley) Monahan. Jan was the devoted wife of the late Hon. John (“Jack”) Concannon.
Jan graduated from Arlington High School and attended Boston College. Her studies were interrupted by her mother's untimely passing and her need to help care for her father. Jan was to demonstrate a selfless attitude and inclination to care for others again and again throughout her life. She relished memories from her early life of family gatherings at the Monahan home in the Point of Pines neighborhood along Revere Beach.
Jan worked as an assistant to Dr. Edwin Land at Polaroid Corporation for a number of years before meeting Jack and starting a family in Braintree. Jan, Jack and family were active members of St. Thomas More Parish – their lives centered around faith and family. Jan particularly enjoyed many an evening socializing at the parish’s Couples Club events and engaging with fellow parishioners in the sodality lay ministry program. Jan was active in community activities in Braintree, including parent/teacher associations.
Jan spent her summers on Cape Cod in Harwich Port with the couple’s three boys, and enjoyed socializing at Wychmere Harbor Club with the family, where they were long-time members. She was an avid tennis player, competing in women’s leagues and playing mixed doubles alongside Jack. She was a competitor, but found the social interaction most rewarding.
Upon Jack’s retirement, the couple retired to Cape Cod. Jan took up golf, which the couple enjoyed together. Jan and Jack volunteered with Meals on Wheels, St. Vincent de Paul and the Family Food Pantry of Cape Cod. Jack suffered a debilitating stroke, and Jan lovingly looked after him during the final stages of his life. When Jack passed away in 2011, Jan pivoted, following her “joiner” instincts. She doubled down on her existing volunteerism. She also joined the Cranberry Valley Women’s Golf Association Nine Holer’s group, and was an active member of Garden Club of Harwich. She became active in several bridge groups, including “Marathon Bridge” tournaments. Jan particularly enjoyed Wednesday night dinners with her close friends at the Scargo Café, which was something she looked forward to each week.
Jan lived her life with grace, dignity and humility. She had a magnetic sense of humor, and projected kindness. She was an exceptional role model for her three boys, especially in how she treated others from all walks of life.
Her legacy lives on through her three children: John Concannon and wife Tran of South Boston; Mark Concannon and wife Julie of Wilmette, IL; and Patrick Concannon and wife Juliann of Scituate. She was the proud grandmother of Owen, Caroline, Grace and Benjamin.
She was predeceased by siblings Edward Monahan, Marjorie Lynch and late husband Lincoln, Richard Monahan and late wife Margaret, and John Monahan and late wife Marie, and sister-in-law Joan Monahan. Survivors include her twin brother Robert Monahan and wife Victoria, sister-in-law Gilda Monahan, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Jan’s family would like to thank the staff at Cape Cod Hospital and at McCarthy Care Center hospice for their professionalism and loving care.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a visitation period on Saturday, November 23, 2024 from 9:00 AM – 10:30 AM in the Doane Beal & Ames Funeral Home, 260 Main Street, West Harwich and Jan’s Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM at Holy Trinity Parish, 246 Main Street, West Harwich.
