Roy W. Stevens, Jr.,68, passed away Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines. A graveside service will be held Monday, October 17, 2016 at 10 a.m. in Peru, Iowa at the Peru Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, October 16, 2016 from 1 to 3 p.m. at McLaren’s Chapel in West Des Moines, Iowa.
Roy was born February 18, 1948 to Roy W. Stevens, Sr. and Lela (Houston) Stevens in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He graduated from Irvin High School in El Paso, Texas in 1966. He joined the Army in 1967 and after serving a tour and a half in Vietnam, he was honorably discharged in 1970. On January 7, 1972 he married the love of his life, Christine Gifford and their union of marriage blessed them with two sons, James and Roy “Ben”. In 1975 he and Christine moved from El Paso to Des Moines, Iowa. Here he continued his career as a truck driver and helped with the in home daycare.
Roy was very active in the Boy Scouts. He achieved the highest honor, Silver Beaver, for being a scout’s leader. He was also recognized as a lifetime scout master. His hobbies included rocketry, fishing, driving around taking in the scenery and he loved the four seasons of Iowa.
Roy is survived by his wife, Chris; sons, Jim Stevens of Clive and Roy “Ben” Stevens of Des Moines; grandchildren Isabella Stevens and Savannah Stevens; brother, Jim Stevens of El Paso, Texas; and sister, Nancy (Ed) West of Memphis, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary Ledbetter.
