Philip C. Vander Meide, 81, died on July 10, 2024. He requested to have a gathering of friends and family at McLaren’s Resthaven Chapel from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 20, 2024, followed by a graveside service at Resthaven Cemetery.
Phil was born in Des Moines, IA on September 1, 1942, to Earl and Mabel Vander Meide. He graduated from Valley High School in 1960 before serving in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1960-1964. He then attended Drake University where he majored in art and minored in religion and psychology. In 1972, he graduated from the Des Moines Police Academy then served on the Des Moines Police Department from 1972-1997. He also served in the Iowa Air National Guard from 1978-1981.
While serving in the Air Guard, Phil traveled to England where he made lifelong friends. He returned to Europe multiple times and enjoyed traveling with friends and family. Phil was an avid photographer. He also loved movies and was even interviewed by the Des Moines Register for his thoughts on police movies. Phil was a trivia aficionado and never missed an episode of Jeopardy. A lover of animals, dogs were constant companions in his life. Phil was also an enthusiastic collector of hats among many other items. In 2002, he became a close friend of Bill. Bill introduced him to new friends and a fresh outlook on life.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Karen Gillis. He is survived by his wife, Sherry Vander Meide; son, Joel Vander Meide (Alexandra); daughter, Kelly Manderschied (Tony); grandchildren, Thomas and Anna Manderschied; and beloved dog, Annie.
