Mary Ann Hicks (Stevens), 88, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 30, 2021 at Wesley Acres Austin Center. Preceding her in death is her beloved husband, John Hicks. She is survived by her sons, Marty (Kelly) of St. Paul, MN and Scott (Colleen), and grandchildren, John and Will of Kennebunk, ME.
The daughter of William and Anna Mae Stevens, Mary Ann was born in Excelsior Springs, MO, August 6, 1933, although she would tell you her life began when she married John, April 1, 1956. She graduated from the University of Central Missouri, Warrensburg with a bachelor’s degree in education. Mary Ann loved teaching second grade, and taught for nearly thirty years in Long Island, NY, Bloomington, IN, and Johnston, IA. She treasured the friendship of colleagues after her retirement and was a member of PEO and Alpha Delta Kappa (ADK).
The teacher in Mary Ann never retired. She took great pride in picking out books, magazines, and activities for her grandsons, and was always eager to hear what they were learning about in school.
John and Mary Ann had the love of a lifetime. They enjoyed entertaining, gourmet groups, parties and made lavish, home-made dinners with friends and family. Stories of these dinner parties were legendary. She also enjoyed the theater, the New Year’s concert at the Civic Center, and loved small group discussions.
She adored her animals. Luci, her Cairn Terrier, went everywhere with her and John.
One exciting family trip was to Costa Rica, where Mary Ann, then 73, participated in the zip line experience. Her nickname, “Unstoppable Mary Ann” was aptly given by John.
Her thoughtful openness and gratitude was endless, and she never failed to share her appreciation of the people in her life: her family, dear friends, and the gracious care givers at Wesley Acres. She had a life of love and fun.
A private service is planned. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Alzheimer's Association.
