Jeffrey Thomas Flynn, 63, died peacefully at Iowa Methodist Medical Center on March 26, 2016, after a short, but brave fight with severe respiratory disorders. A memorial service will be held at McLaren’s Funeral Home, on Friday, April 1, 2016, at 6 p.m.
Jeff was born in Des Moines on February 12, 1953, the son of Joan and Peter Flynn, Sr., and lived in the area all of his life. He attended St. Augustin School and Dowling High School and then went to work with his father-in-law, Francis Whitehurst, in the home building business. After several years, Jeff started Flynn Development Co., beginning his very successful career as an entrepreneur and homebuilder. Jeff also started TrimForce which does trim carpentry for area builders. His services were always in high demand, and remain so today. Everyone was amazed at his incredible talents. In the last several years, rheumatoid arthritis took its toll and he no longer could do what he loved most. Even so, he continued running his custom homebuilding business, relying heavily on his son, Danny, to whom he passed on his skill, artistry and craftsmanship.
Perhaps Jeff’s greatest legacy is the family acreage. He and Pam devoted the past 33 years to creating Flynn Acres, where his spirit will live on in his children and grandchildren.
Jeff is survived by his mother, Joan Flynn; his wife of 41 years, Pam; their children, Nicki (Justin) Saiz and Danny (Courtney) Flynn; brothers, Peter, Jr. (Nancy) and Andy (Linda Shevlin); sister, Mary Sarah; sister-in-law, Rosemary (Chuck Backstrom); grandsons, Merrick and Maclane; and his mother-in-law, Ruth Whitehurst. He was preceded in death by his father, Peter Flynn, Sr.; brother, Paul Flynn and father-in-law, Francis Whitehurst.
The family wishes to thank the amazing CCU staff at Methodist Medical Center for taking such wonderful care of Jeff. Special thanks to Ashley for her compassion in his final hours.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until service time at McLaren’s Funeral Home, 801 – 19th Street, West Des Moines. A private burial will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hope Ministries.
