Glenn W. Chapman, 90, died Sunday, August 24, 2014 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church (1627 Grand Avenue, West Des Moines, IA) followed by burial with military honors at Resthaven Cemetery.
Glenn was born and raised in Ottumwa, IA the son of Green Clay Sr. and Elvira (Cundiff) Chapman. Glenn graduated from Ottumwa High School and was a decorated U.S. Army veteran serving in the 101st Airborne Division, 327th Glider Infantry Regiment during World War II. He worked at the Ottumwa Courier before moving to Des Moines in 1955 where he worked for the Des Moines Register until his retirement in 1989.
He is survived by his wife, Norma Disney Chapman; two sons, Jerry (Lynn) Chapman of Jamestown, ND and Curt (Gina) Chapman of Westminster, CA; five step-children, Mary Pat (Jacquelyn Baker) Disney, Marcia (Dana) McNamar, Margaret Ann (Charles) Leak, Maureen (Keith) Griffitts and Mark Francis Disney; two grandchildren, Brian and Aaron Chapman of Fargo, ND; five step-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Glenn was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife of 50 years, Bettye (Crosson) Chapman; two brothers, Everett Winfield Chapman and Green Clay Chapman Jr. ; and three sisters, Leona Jane Scully, Cleora Susan Thorne and Frances Io Blanchard.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church. Memorial contributions may be given to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or the charity of your choice.
