John J. Mulcahy of Wellfleet and Provincetown passed away on November 11, 2012, he was 81.
He was the beloved son of Dr. and Mrs. Richard J. Mulcahy of Hingham, MA. He attended Hingham schools and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Boston University. He also studied art at the University of Maryland Extension Program, Munich, Germany, and he studied with Arthur Stafford a noted Gloucester and Boston artist.
John served in Germany with the U.S. Army. He taught arts and crafts in Weymouth, MA before starting his own Art Studio Gallery in Wellfleet. His light drenched plain air landscapes, seascapes and dramatic self portraits are in hundreds of collections across the country. His work is in the permanent collection of the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, Cape Cod Museum of Fine Art, and the State Department Collection of Regional American Artists in Washington DC.
His work has received acceptance and awards to numerous juried competitions, including the Worcester Museum National Juried Exhibit, Duxbury Museum, Springfield Museum Exhibit, Attleboro Museum, Plymouth Guild of Artists Juried Exhibit, Cape Cod Art Association members show, all New England shows, all Eastern art exhibits, Scituate Arts Festival, and Bar Harbor, ME.
His art has been displayed at numerous shows and galleries. Among them are the Copley Art Gallery in Boston, MA, Kiley Court Gallery in Provincetown, Alper’s Art Gallery in Andover, MA, Steve Aiken “234” Gallery in Wellfleet, Harmon’s Gallery in Wellfleet, Addison’s Gallery in Orleans, Frank Hogan’s Gallery in Orleans, Chandier Gallery and Swansboro Gallery in Wellfleet, Thomas Crane Library in Quincy, Milton Public Library, First National Bank of Boston, and the Cherry Stone Gallery in Wellfleet.
He painted for two years in Maine, Monhegan Island and Bar Harbor, and exhibited his work at Main Street Gallery.
John leaves behind his sister Catherine of Wellfleet, several cousins and many friends from around the country.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, November 16, 2012 at 11:00am in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 2282 Route 6, Wellfleet, MA. Burial will be private. A memorial in John’s honor will also be held at a later date.
