James (Jim) Grant Connors, Jr., of Chatham passed away peacefully, on September 1, 2022, at the age of 88. Jim was born into an Irish-Catholic Family in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on June 18, 1934, the first of six children and the only son of James Grant Connors, Sr., and Marie Larkin Connors. He lived a quiet gentle life, spending his first 76 years in the family home in Bellevue in Pittsburgh. Sports and his Catholic faith continually sustained him. He served as an altar boy at the Church of the Assumption in Bellevue, played tackle on the school’s football team and served as a class officer at North Catholic High School in Pittsburgh.
After graduating from high school, he worked as a bookkeeper at the Pittsburgh Athletic Club, before serving two years in the Army working as a clerk in Germany. He then returned to the family home in Pittsburgh, where he began a career as an agent in the specialty steel business, supplying materials to manufacturing companies.
With declining health, Jim relocated in 2010 to Chatham, Massachusetts, to be closer to family. Over the next twelve years, he enjoyed celebrating holidays with family and friends, outings to the Chatham Squire for a cheeseburger and Coke, and occasional trips to Florida to vacation with his sister Jane Rudd and her husband T. James Rudd.
Jane and James Rudd’s grandchildren brought great joy to Jim during his twelve years on the Cape: Collin Pham, Caraline Pham, Connor Ostrow, Adrian Ostrow, Nate Johnson and Axel Johnson.
Jim stayed true to his Catholic faith and love of sports. As well as asking for his mother’s rosary beads on his last day, he was determined to watch the Pitt vs. West Virginia college football game, predicting that Pitt would triumph. His prediction proved correct though he passed away just hours before the game began.
Special thanks to Mary Bantick and her deceased husband, Bob Bantick, for their close attention to Jim. And a note of appreciation to the staff at Chatham Congregation House where Jim lived for twelve years.
Jim is survived by his sisters: Mary Ann Connors Larkin and her husband, Patric Pepper; Peggy Connors Woodworth and her husband John Baer Woodworth; Nell Connors; Jane Rudd and her husband T. James Rudd; and Eileen Connors. Numerous cousins, nieces and nephews also mourn his passing, as well as special Pittsburgh friends: Denise Gray and Mike Peterson.
Burial services for Jim will be at the North Truro Cemetery in Truro, where he will be given military honors at a later date.
