Virginia Rose Kirksey, 88, of Houston, Texas passed away on July 29, 2020. She was born in Monette, Arkansas on August 15, 1931 to Jewel and Freddie Taylor. She married Jerrel Kirksey on March 8, 1951 and they had been married almost 69 years when he passed just a few months ago. In 1966, Jerrel and Virginia moved their family of 3 boys to Houston. Jerrel and Virginia worshiped at Southeast Church of Christ for many years. She was an active volunteer in many different programs in the church and especially loved working with the kids. Many children will remember her as a greeter at the door of the children’s wing, and adults will remember her in the foyer welcoming visitors. Virginia was very hospitable and social – she loved entertaining and had many people in her home over the years. She had a heart for others and was always cooking and baking to take someone a meal when they were in need of cheering. She was known for her ‘Funeral Cake’ that she baked for others who were experiencing loss.
Virginia loved her family and they all have many precious memories and stories to tell about her. She hosted many cookouts and meals for her family, using any excuse for a get-together. Christmas was her absolute favorite time to gather her family around – they all made a point to make it to Kirksey Family Christmas where there was always love and laughter. She loved to give gifts - and to get them!
Virginia was one of 2 children. Her parents and sister all preceded her in death. She survived the loss of both her husband, Jerrel, and oldest son, Michael, in February of this year. Her grieving family includes: daughter-in-law Debi and her sons, Ryan (wife Allison) and Jason (wife Cristen); son Tim and daughter-in-law Janice of Tyler, Texas and their sons Tyson (wife Sarah) and Kevan (wife Katie); and son Terry and daughter-in-law Rhonda Kirksey of Colorado Springs, Colorado, their son Zac and daughter Hannah Bye (husband Keegan). Virginia additionally leaves five great-granddaughters and four great-grandsons.
The family will have a private graveside service Sunday, August 2nd. If desired, and in lieu of flowers, the family would request a remembrance in her name to the Mike Kirksey Memorial Fund for the Southeast Church of Christ Children’s Ministry. Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared below for the Kirksey family.
