It is hard to recall a Council 660 event without Cookie. She was always there offering her assistance and occasionally her opinion, whether that agreed with Frank or not. It was a pleasure being in her company because she brought a sense of warmth and compassion towards others. She had a wealth of experience within LULAC at all levels of the organization. For her contributions to LULAC, she was honored with membership in the LULAC Women’s Hall of Fame. In her acceptance speech, she graciously acknowledged all the people who had supported her, with one notable exception, her husband, Frank. We had fun razzing her about that, which she took in good humor. That’s just one example of the many memories of Cookie that always bring a smile to my face. 
Thanks, Cookie, for the sunshine you brought into the lives of those who knew you.

Maria "Cookie" Ortiz (4-14-1935 to 7-3-2022), was born in Mineral, Texas. She is preceded in death by her father Ramon Rodriguez, by her mother Sonforosa Maldonado, by her brothers Horacio, Angel, and Benjamin.  She is survived be her sister Palmira Loya (Balde), by her husband Frank M. Ortiz, by her son Michael, by two granddaughters Danielle and Leigh Ann, and great grandchildren Joshua Ray, Arianna, Atina, and Michael, and several relatives.

She worked at NASA in Houston in a procurement department as a buyer acquiring supplies and space equipment for the Space Shuttle program. She was an active member and officer in the League of Latin American Citizens (LULAC) and was a member of the LULAC Women Hall of Fame. She was a special assistant to the LULAC National President, and special advisor to the LULAC National Vice President. Finally, she was president of the NASA Area LULAC Council 660.

She will be missed. May her soul rip.

Lori and I had the privilege of knowing and loving Cookie for nearly 3 decades.   She and Frank have always been an important part of our lives.  Cookie is a gentle soul always with an easy smile and beautiful countenance.   She is blessed by our Almighty God now and is part of the ages never to be forgotten because she brought such joy and beauty to the world.  I will miss her friendship and keen intellect,  but rest assured in the knowledge  she will greet us one day.    May God bless her beautiful eternal soul.
