Jimmy Gates was an entrepreneur at 20 years old when he opened the legendary Southside Smoke Shop. It was the first hip hop smoke shop; Jimmy was a true innovator at a young age. He was always willing to give back to his community through free events like block parties, huge concerts and provided many people with jobs to support their families. He would have given you the shirt off his back if you needed it. He touched so many lives with his caring heart and positive mindset that was infectious to all he met.
Most of all Jimmy loved to spend time with his kids Jacob Allison, Savannah Gates and his newly born granddaughter, Ayla Elisabeth Allison. He loved to travel, he was also fearless and a very accomplished man who did great things for the city of Houston and always took care of the people around him.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his father James Harry Gates Sr.; granny Venita DuVerney; and grandmother Etta Gates who all cherished him.
Jimmy is survived by his mother Carrie Ewing; son Jacob Allison; daughter Savannah Gates; two sisters Lisa Gates and Maranda O'Donnell; two brothers John Diaz and Brandon Gates; and granddaughter Ayla.
Memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
