Born in Galveston, TX with a twin sister, Barbara on August 18, 1944, to Ray and Irene Gutierrez and an older (and much wiser sister, Brenda.). She lived most of her life in Galveston (BOI) from 1944 until 1976. She had five wonderful children and in 1976 moved to Texas city TX and met the most wonderful man, David that God ever blessed her with. Her children became his children not born of his blood, but born in his heart. Dave, she called him Thumper, spoiled her tremendously.
Miss Martin had quite a quite a few careers. She enjoyed working with people. She was Assistant Manager for Kroger and Safeway grocery stores. She always had an Administrative position and strived to do the best she could do. She loved to teach, teaching at MTI College of Business and Technology and San Jacinto College. After teaching she went to work for United Steelworkers local 13-1 in Texas city where she worked until she was 74 retiring from USW 13-1 and CWA Local 6228. Both union jobs provided her with a comfortable retirement.
She spent her retirement traveling and enjoying her family at home. She was able to spend more time in the garden, pulling weeds up by the ROOTS and enjoying the flowers. Being at home in the garden she found such peace and tranquility and she loved having family gatherings with her husband. He always made sure that being the great cook that he was no one ever went home hungry. There was always joy, laughter and LOVE and enough food to feed the entire neighborhood.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 2, 2024 at 10:00 am at Forest Park East Funeral Home, located at 21620 Gulf Freeway in Webster, TX. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Betty's name.
