On August 22, 1941, the city of Los Angeles welcomed a Servant of God named Andrea to the union of Maurice Reed and Earline Gill. For the next 80 years, from childhood, through marriage, family, church, community and service, Andrea lived her life to the fullest. She lived in the Houston area until her death on June 18, 2022.
Ms. Earline’s marriage to Rev. Forest L. Livingston, then Pastor of St. John Primitive Baptist Church of Dallas, Texas, resulted in Andrea moving to and completing her secondary education and religious training in the Dallas area.
Family life in marriage began when Charles Ray Greer and Andrea committed their love for one another on November 25, 1965. To this union, two children were born: Rae Andrelyn of Houston, Texas, and Charles Andre’ of Barcelona, Spain. They were nurtured, loved and guided to ensure they would become successful adults.
Andrea was a conscientious servant in her church and community. She served Faith United Methodist Church in the following capacities: an active member of the Sisters of Ruth, head of the greeting committee, member of the usher board, church choir, finance committee, Centennial Committee, delegate to the Annual Conference, and a member of the advisory board. Andrea was one of the original founding members of the Sensational Salad lunch fundraiser and a member of the Staff Parish Relations (SPRC) Committee.
Andrea believed in the importance of education. She received a B.A. in Sociology (1965) and a M.A. in Counseling and Guidance (1971) from Texas Southern University; IBM Librarian Certification Program, Graduate School of Library and Information Science, Drexel University (1985) and the University of Texas at Austin (1988-91); and Texas Education Agency Learning Resources Specialist Certification (1995). Andrea also studied computer science, multimedia technology and library management during her educational years. She held several positions throughout her professional career that included teaching, chief librarian at IBM Federal Systems Company, school librarian for Danbury Independent Schools (Danbury, TX) and owner of the Counseling and Consulting Associates of Dickinson.
Many acknowledgements of Andrea’s extraordinary service efforts came in the form of awards and honors. She received the Village Keepers Award for Collective Work and Responsibility (UJIMA), Kwanzaa 1994, College of the Mainland, Texas City, TX; IBM Cost Effectiveness and Quality Program Award (1992); the 1992 NAACP Citizen of the Year Award, Dickinson, TX; Outstanding Citizen Award (1990); Bay Area Libraries Association Award (1989); and the Distinguished Service Award, Dickinson Public Library Board of Directors (1987).
Her civic duties were equally as impressive. She was a member of the Board of Directors for the M.I. Lewis Social Services Center and a consultant to its Creative Living programs. Andrea was a member of the Blue-Ribbon Committee for the Dickinson United Way campaign and the Galveston County Housing Authority Board. With untiring spirit, Andrea served local (public) and school libraries. As a Licensed Professional Counselor, she conducted parenting and S.A.T. preparatory classes. The Clear Lake - Bay Area chapter of Jack and Jill of America and the Texas Southern University National Alumni Board benefited from her membership and dedication to serve. One great honor for Andrea and Charles, both was in 1999 when the Mayor and City Council of Dickinson proclaimed February 10 as Andrea and Charles Greer Day for their dedication to the community.
Andrea loved shopping and sampling culinary delights while traveling the world. Barcelona, Paris and London were some of her favorites. Other adventures included a church mission trip to Alaska, and other travels to South Africa, Senegal, Eswatini and Canada. She sunbathed on the beaches of Jamaica, the Virgin Islands, Panama, Grand Cayman, Mexico and various cruises. She was satisfied with completing her bucket list of U.S. traveling to the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls and over 40 states. She appreciated Broadway plays and all activities related to The Arts. One of her greatest joys was becoming Miss Homecoming Alumna 1990 during the 43rd Homecoming celebration at her alma mater, Texas Southern University.
Andrea was a woman with an extraordinary personality who communicated honestly and directly to any man, woman, or child. She was a loyal and devoted friend. She left us knowing that she loved us, cared for us, and wanted the best for us.
Andrea was preceded in death by her husband Charles Ray Greer; her mother, Earline Campbell; her father, Maurice Reed; her adoptive father, Rev. Forest L. Livingston and John W. Campbell; sisters, Shanda Fernandez and Leah “Jeannie” Thompson.
She leaves to mourn two children, Rae Andrelyn Greer, Houston, TX, and Charles Andre’ (Maria Jesus); granddaughter Carlota Raquel, Barcelona Spain; three brothers, Rev. Forest E. Livingston, Dallas, TX; Gary Livingston (Pam), Ft. Worth, TX; and Douglas Maurice Reed, Los Angeles, CA; three sisters, Vanessa Livingston-Simpson (Glenn Sr.), Arlington, TX; Vanessa Goodrich (Henry), Ft. Worth, TX; and LaWanda Robertson (Willie), Caney, TX; two sisters-in-law, Nina Hodge, Marshall, TX and Laurice Greer, Dallas, TX and a host of nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends.
