Harley "Ray" Ottinger, age 77, of Waynesville, NC passed away on Thursday, September 21, 2023. Ray was born in Cocke County, TN on October 23, 1945, to the late Paul and Minnie Talton Ottinger. Much of Ray's childhood was spent in Waynesville with the late Carl and Ginny Gaddis Shelton. He graduated from Waynesville Township High School in 1965 and joined the US Navy where he served his country honorably in Vietnam. Ray was also a graduate of Haywood Technical Institute. He retired from Dayco after 30 years of faithful service. Ray was a 32nd degree mason and was a member of Waynesville Masonic Lodge #259 A.F. & A. M. and the Waynesville Eastern Star. Ray enjoyed trout fishing, camping, gardening, canning, but mostly spending time with his family.
In addition to his parents and honorary parents, Ray was preceded in death by his brothers, Darrell and Fred "Dit" Ottinger; sisters, Pat Henderson, Margie Rowland and Charlotte Barnes; and daughter-in-law, Michelle Ottinger.
Ray is survived by is his daughter, Donna Ottinger Hall (Lynden); sons, Glenn and John (Caroline); grandchildren, Marshall Ottinger, Emily Hall Stuckey (Will), Ethan Hall (Chelsie), Madeline Ottinger Rigdon (Coy), Olivia Ottinger, and Mariel Ottinger; former wife, Vickie Ottinger Currin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday, September 27, 2023, in the chapel of Garrett Funerals and Cremations with the Reverend Chip Plemmons officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday prior to the service at the funeral home from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm. Entombment will follow services at Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Park.
