Mary Sue (Gilbert) Eavey, 96, of Staunton, passed away on Sunday December 15, 2013 at her residence.
Mrs. Eavey was born on July 2, 1917 in Augusta County and was a daughter of the late Irvine E. and Hattie (Dodd) Gilbert. Mary Sue was a lifetime member of Barren Ridge Church of the Brethren. She loved cooking and painting, and was a caregiver to many. Mary Sue was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to many who will greatly miss her.
Mrs. Eavey was preceded in death by her husband Harry B. Eavey on October 1, 1979.
Mary Sue is survived by two daughters, Rebecca “Becky” Harbin Davis and husband Clifford of Plainview, Texas, Diane Garber of Staunton; a brother, Elwood Gilbert and wife Ann of Harrisonburg; two grandchildren, Derek Harbin and wife Deidra, Kimberly Dove and husband Joel; three great-grandchildren, Dorian and Daylen Harbin, Liam Dove; brother-in-law, Arthur Lawhorne; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Eavey was preceded in death by three brothers, Paul Gilbert, John Gilbert, James Gilbert; three sisters, Virginia Lawhorne, Evelyn Wine, Anna Mae Stover; and a son-in-law, Don Harbin.
A graveside service will be held on Friday December 20, 2013 at 1 PM at Barren Ridge Church of the Brethren Cemetery with Pastors Galen Combs and Isaac Harper officiating. Following the graveside, a Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 PM at Barren Ridge Church of the Brethren. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6 until 8 PM at the Barren Ridge Church of the Brethren.
Active pallbearers for the service will be Jeff Gilbert, Larry Lawhorne, David Lawhorne, Mike Gilbert, Mark Smith, Tony Lowery, Fletcher Gilbert. Honorary pallbearers will be Shelly Wade, Paula Pease, Betty Ingram, Caitlin Kellison, Stacey Puffenbarger, Mary Long, Bobby Joe Kester, Nelson Young, Neil Bosserman, Brian Lowery, Dwayne Rhodes, and Lynn Sullivan.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Barren Ridge Church of the Brethren 1790 Barren Ridge Road, Staunton, VA 24401
