John Edward Elledge, 80, departed this life on July 24, 2021. John was born July 30, 1940 in Jefferson, Kentucky. Son of the late Cecil and Varina Elledge, John grew up in Pulaski, Va. After finishing high school, John became a mechanic for Dominion Power.
A loving husband, father, grandfather and friend, he was known as Papa John to all. After retiring from Dominion Power, Papa John joined Wintergreen Resort where he kept himself in “biscuit money”. His love of travel provided him with many adventures and stories to share. He enjoyed camping with friends and family and would frequently load up the camper for a quick trip to his favorite destination, Myrtle Beach. Papa John loved to tell a good a joke and always reminded his friends and family members, “Don’t take any wooden nickels.” at the end of each visit.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his wife, Florence M. Ramsey of Afton, Va., daughters Sandra (Sam) Houchens, Lisa Elledge and stepson, Travis (Nicole) Gibson. He is survived by his sons John (Ritchie) Elledge, Jr.; Dennis (Dawn) Elledge; stepsons Mike (Valerie) Gibson and Rick (Dana) Gibson; stepdaughters Janet (Alan) Dickie and Shelby (John) Bruguiere as well as cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on July 31, 2021 at Reynolds Hamrick Funeral Homes in Waynesboro, Va., with interment to follow at Greenfield Pentecostal Church Cemetery in Afton, Va. In lieu of flowers, family requests donations be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation.
