Joseph Gerald Henry went home to the arms of Jesus, October 22, 2010, surrounded by his loving family after a valiant battle with lung cancer. He died at home, which was his wish. He was 74.
Born in Queens, NY on June 1, 1936, Joseph was the son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Henry of Throgs Neck, Bronx, NY
He served his country proudly in The United States Navy during the Korean War era. Following his discharge from the Navy he worked as a manager for Peter Reeves in New York City. Joe was a member of the Teamsters Union, working first for Schaeffer Brewery in Greenburg, NY and eventually working for Yellow Freight, in Maybrook, NY until his retirement.
A family statement reads, "Joe was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who always worked hard to provide for his family."
He was a loyal 40 year, third degree member of Knights of Columbus #5890 Our Lady of Lourdes Council, Washingtonville, NY where he enjoyed excellent relationships with his brother Knights. Joe was a faithful communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Washingtonville since 1974. He loved people and was known for his intelligence, quick Irish wit and keen sense of humor. Joe was one of a kind, always proud of his Irish heritage, and had a kind word and a smile for everyone he met.
Surviving are his loving wife of 47 years, Edna (Kennedy) Henry; his beloved sons, Michael Henry and his wife, Darlene of Rock Tavern, NY and Barry Henry of Harriman NY; his treasured grandchildren, Hope and Michael Henry; his brothers: Patrick and his wife, Kathleen, Jack and his wife, Susan, William and his wife, Kathleen and Brendan and his wife, Camille; his Godsons, Terry O’Hanlon and Joseph Walsh as well as several nieces and nephews and cherished friends. Joe is further survived by several sister-in-laws and brother-in-laws in the United States, Ireland, England and Australia. He was predeceased by two sisters, Joan Walsh and Ann Henry and three brothers: Thomas, Michael and Kevin Henry.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., Monday, October 25 at the David T. Ferguson Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10 a.m., Tuesday, October 26 at St. Mary’s Church in Washingtonville. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
