Margaret Lucretia Garrett

Peggy Garrett, 91, passed away peacefully on October 30th in Washington, DC. She was born at home in Haddonfield, NJ to parents Margaret (Davis) and Robert Y. Garrett, Jr., and was educated in the Haddonfield public schools. She graduated from Bucknell University, Phi Beta Kappa, in 1952. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1956 as one of only six women in her class. Upon completing her residency in New Haven, CT in 1968, she moved to Washington, DC, where she practiced psychiatry until retirement.

Peggy was astute, kind and generous; friends remarked that she was elegant and independent. While some might have seen her as quiet and unassuming, she had a terrific wit and sense of humor. Peggy enjoyed museums, theater, and playing games with friends and family. She loved to travel, and had a particular affinity for the Maine coast and Fenwick Island, DE. She was a fellow of the Washington Psychiatric Society and a member of the Georgetown Presbyterian Church. A long time member of the Rotary Club of Washington, DC., she helped organize bingo nights at Walter Reed National Medical Center. She also volunteered as a tutor at her local public school, and conducted oral history interviews for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Her brother Robert F. Y. Garrett, III preceded her in death in 2021. She is survived by three adoring nieces Margaret F. Garrett of Washington, DC, Elizabeth G. Mayer of Mt. Pleasant, SC, Mary L. Foust of Linwood, NJ; sister-in-law Mary S. Garrett of Beesleys Pt, NJ; a great-nephew Garrett F. Mayer; and great-niece Margaret G. Mayer.
