Janet Harris

Janet's journey through life was marked by an unwavering spirit, intellectual curiosity, wit and kindness that knew no bounds. Janet was the rock to many and leaves an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew her. Though she is preceded in death by her dearest friend, Evanthia Ann Kontos, Janet's spirit is carried forward by all of those who had the privilege of knowing her.

Janet's legacy of love and laughter continues through a host of family and friends who were her world. Foremost among them is Mary Ann Huffman, whose presence in Janet’s life was a source of immeasurable joy and companionship. She is also survived by Kathleen and Donald Drain, Irene and Kostas Fostieris and family, Joanna and George Pedas and family, Nicole Marmaras, Nick Marmaras, and her adored godson, Jimmy Spyropoulos, along with numerous friends who were touched by her vivacious spirit.

Proud of her Greek Cretan heritage, Janet embodied the soul of her culture, a cornerstone of her identity. She was often the leader of even the most intricate Greek dances, such as the Sailor Dance, with unmatched enthusiasm. Janet's compassion knew no bounds, especially when it came to animals. She was a friend to all creatures, often opening her heart and home to dogs in need. Her love for nature was also evident in her admiration for birds, a testament to her appreciation of life in all its forms.

An intellect to be reckoned with, Janet was a master of words who never missed an episode of Jeopardy. Her academic prowess was evident in her dual degree in German and Spanish from the University of Maryland, where she graduated summa cum laude. Her professional life was as diverse as her interests, ranging from running the Marmaras Nut Shop on F Street, to being part of the management team for numerous Benetton retail stores, to her valued and successful 36-year tenure with Giant Food.

Janet's life was a vibrant tapestry of deep connections and rich experiences. Her presence was marked by a smile that could light up any room and a loyalty that endeared her to many, making her not just a friend but a treasured confidant. With a spirit that knew no bounds, she embraced every opportunity to learn and experience more of the world. Janet traversed 27 countries, and visited more museums than one could count, a testament to her love for the arts and culture, enriching her life and those around her with stories and experiences. Her adventures served as vivid chapters in a life well-lived, marked by a desire to fully embrace the world's diversity and beauty.

In remembrance of Janet Sue Harris, we celebrate a life beautifully lived with passion and kindness, and a legacy of joy, resilience, and love that will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew her. Her spirit remains a beacon of light that continues to inspire our lives.

Calling Hours for Janet will be held Tuesday, January 23, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Joseph Gawler's Sons, LLC, 5130 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, DC 20016. A funeral service will occur Wednesday, January 24, 2024 at 11:30 AM at Saint Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 36th St & Massachusetts Ave NW, Washington, District of Columbia.
