Stephen Philip Fay, Ret. WFD, 65, of Scituate, passed away unexpectedly on March 27, 2023. He was the beloved husband of Diane (Gillespie) Paul-Fay. Born in Providence, Stephen was the son of the late C. Vincent and Virginia E. (Wood) Fay.
He was a graduate of Bishop Hendricken High School, Nathaniel Hawthorne College, and Providence College. He became an officer and pilot in the United States Navy before moving to a career as a firefighter. Steve was a firefighter through and through. He started his fire career at Meshanticut Volunteer Fire Company where he met his best friend of nearly 50 years, Billy DeAngelus. He served the city of Warwick for 30 years and retired a Captain in 2016. Steve went on to become Chief of the Bridgton Fire Department in Maine. Most recently, Steve was a member of the North Scituate Fire Department, and shocked everyone by driving the rescue.
Steve was a member of Massachusetts Task Force 1 (MA-TF 1) Urban Search and Rescue Team (US&R). He was also a rigging instructor at the New Hampshire Fire Academy and truly loved to drill the “right way” to do things into those around him.
Throughout his career he was an integral component of responding to thousands of emergencies, including some of our city, state, and countries most horrific tragedies; including the 1996 Olympic bombing, Worcester Cold Storage fire, September 11th World Trade Center attack, and the Station Nightclub fire.
“Not for nothing”, but Steve was more than just a firefighter. He was a lifelong avid hockey fan (ask his texting Bruins buddies Paul and Bob), a Scuba Diver, a Crane Operator, and a proficient welder. He would give you the shirt off his back, but then tell you how to wear it.
In addition to his wife, Stephen is survived by his daughters, Shannon Ewing (Andrew) and Stephanie Bell (Jeffrey), his grandchildren, Charlotte Ewing and Wyatt Bell, his former wife Jean Fay, his step-sons Robert Paul, and Christopher Paul, his brothers, Mark Fay (Ellen) and Christopher Fay, Esq. (Anne), and his sisters, Moira Fay and Kara Fay, Esq, his many nieces and nephews, and his beloved dogs Sadie and Nala.
Funeral, Tuesday at 8:45 am at the Russell J. Boyle and Son Funeral Home, 142 Centerville Rd., Warwick, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am in St. Kevin Church, 333 Sandy Lane, Warwick. Burial will be private. Visitation Monday 5 – 8 pm.
Due to his strong dislike of flowers, please instead donate in his honor to The Providence Canteen or The Leary Firefighters Foundation.
