Barbara was the daughter of the late Joshua and Sarah (Clayton) Turner. She was a lifelong resident of Warren. She was a graduate of Warren High School, Class of 1944. She worked for J.J. Newberry Co. in Warren, where she met John while he was stationed with the U.S. Coast Guard on Prudence Island during WW II. They were married in 1945. She later worked as a school secretary for the Joyce Street School, Child Street School, and Warren High School. An accomplished cook and baker, she was known for her wonderful pies. She loved to sew, knit and crochet and would always be found with a pair of knitting needles or crochet hook in her hands. Barbara enjoyed summers at the family’s cottage on Echo Lake in Chepachet and cabin in Maine. In their retirement years, Barbara and John enjoyed winters in Florida. She was a long-time parishioner of St. Mark’s Church Warren and later Church of the Epiphany, Rumford, where she knit prayer shawls for those in need of comfort and was a member of the “Fabulous Friday Folders.” Her greatest joy was the time spent with family, especially her grandchildren.
She is survived by one son, Steven A. McGrath and his wife Mary-Beth of Attleboro; two grandchildren, Christopher J. McGrath and his wife Catherine and Abbey D. McGrath and her fiancé Samuel Raheb; two great-grandchildren, Thomas and Conor McGrath and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Howard Turner, Joshua Turner, and Gladys Gilkenson.
Services will be on Friday, April 26, 2024, at 9:00 AM from the Wilbur-Romano Funeral Home, 615 Main St., Warren, followed by a Requiem Eucharist at 10:00 AM in Church of the Epiphany, 1336 Pawtucket Ave., Rumford, RI 02916. Visiting hours are Thursday from 4:00 – 7:00 PM. Donations in her memory may be made to the Church of the Epiphany. Burial will be in Warren South Burial Ground.
