Born and raised in Detroit, Ray's journey was one of perseverance, hard work, and a passion for life. From a young age, Ray shouldered responsibilities to support his family, taking on various odd jobs that shaped his character and work ethic. He began his career pumping gas at his uncle's station, crafting delectable treats at Dunk Donuts, delivering ice for iceboxes, and even drove an ice cream cart. Yet amidst these diverse roles, Ray's talent as a baseball pitcher shone brightly. His abilities on the diamond led him to the minor leagues and even brought him to a tryout with the Detroit Tigers. Eventually, Ray proudly donned the jersey of the St. Louis Browns, showcasing his dedication and skill on the baseball field.
Ray's sense of duty and service extended beyond sports. He answered the call to serve his country, joining the Army and committing ten years of his life to its cause with 2 years of active duty and 8 years in the Reserves. His bravery and commitment to protecting his fellow citizens were unwavering.
After his military service, Ray transitioned into civilian life, where he found fulfillment working in a warehouse, handling parts for electricians, and being an integral member of the Teamsters union. Alongside his professional pursuits, Ray shared a beautiful partnership with his beloved wife, Lillian, for 48 years until her passing in 2000. Together, they found joy in living on the canal, spending cherished moments aboard their boat, and embarking on adventures together. Ray's love for automobiles and music was also evident throughout his life. He indulged his passion for cars and showcased his musical talents as a member of the Chord-O-Tones Band, where he played the saxophone and clarinet alongside his brothers.
Ray will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his resilience in the face of adversity, and his vibrant spirit that touched the lives of all who knew him. Though he may no longer be with us, his legacy of hard work, love, and camaraderie will continue to inspire and resonate with those who were fortunate enough to have known him.
