Mary Susan Knight, 97, of Warren, Michigan, passed away November 10, 2024. Born July 7, 1927 in Colville Washington, daughter of Ebba Emma Day (Raun) and JW Day. She was the wife of Walter H. Knight (deceased), mother to: son, Michael H Knight (deceased), daughter, Suzanne B. Knight (deceased), Nancy S. Milewski, Robert Milewski (spouse), son, Walter D. Knight, Carol Knight (spouse) daughter, Cinda R. Schledewitz, Richard Schledewitz (spouse), and Grandmother to beloved Grandchildren and Great grandchildren. And friend of beloved caregiver Nancy Lopetrone.
From an early age, it was clear that Mary was destined to create something truly special. She wasn’t interested in worldly accolades or grand achievements; instead, her greatest joy and success was raising her family and creating a loving home for them. Her dedication as a mother and mentor shone in the way she guided her family in their faith, teaching them to find strength and solace in God’s love.
Her love didn’t stop with her family. In her later years, Mary embarked on a project that brought her immense joy. She began sewing dresses for little girls in need. Armed with donated fabric and her trusty sewing machine, Mary crafted over 100 beautiful dresses, each stitch imbued with her boundless love and care. She thrilled at the thought of each dress finding its way to a little girl in Africa, offering them not just clothing, but a piece of her heart.
As many of you know, Mary was a stubborn and determined woman. She often said she wanted to remain in the home she and Walter built until the Lord called her home. And that’s exactly what happened. Her willpower and spirit never waned, and now she’s reunited with Walter, her son Michael, and her own beloved parents in heaven.
What we will miss most about Mary is her unwavering love and support. She had a remarkable ability to lift others with just a smile or a few kind words. Her prayers offered comfort to many and she always made time to help, no matter what the circumstance. Seldom did you say goodbye to her without feeling lighter than when you’d arrived.
Mary was an incredible partner to Walter, for over 70 long years. She met Walter in Spokane, Washington on VJ Day when he was returning from WWII. They embraced on the street. It was love at first sight. They were married six weeks later across the State line in Idaho because they were able to quickly get a marriage license there. Together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and adventure. Her stories of Walter, mixed with anticipation of their reunion, warmed us all as she reflected on their time together.
Mary’s strength wasn’t just in her actions, but in how she lived her life—rooted in God, dedicated to family, and extended to all who crossed her path in need of love. One of her favorite Bible verses is Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” kjv
