Gary Swanson, age 56 of Waterford, died, Monday, January 6, 2014. He was born on February 16, 1957 in Detroit, son of the late Guy and the late Florence (nee: Pletka) Swanson. One of Gary's most profound traits was definitely the love and passion he held for his homeland, the United States of America. With a patriotism that ran deep, he stood strong & proud in his unwavering belief that he was part of the greatest nation in the world. As a citizen of this eclectic landscape, many of Gary's hobbies and pastimes were those enjoyed in the out-of-doors amidst the plethora of America's beauty and scenic splendor. They included his love of hunting, fishing, motorcycling, and snowmobiling. Obviously, the seasons and weather played a part in the timing of each, yet they all provided countless hours of enjoyment and memory-making moments. And as a lover of the outdoors, escaping the concrete jungle often meant heading north to his cabin in the woods, his little "Kalkaska Kastle." Getting away to such a beautiful and pristine part of The Mitten never ceased to afford Gary the comfort and rejuvenation that would cleanse and strengthen his spirit. Yes, one can hunt, fish, and enjoy the power of a motorcycle or snowmobile in this tri-county area,…but there's just something different and special about the "Up North Experience!" Gary knew it,…and it called his name often.Gary was also known for being quite the cook, and handy in the kitchen. His culinary repertoire was wide-ranging, but nevermore appreciated and enjoyed than when he fired up the Ol' BBQ. When he got that Manly Monster up & going, you could always count on something tasty and delicious to follow. He also had some favorite TV watching pleasures,…albeit dated,…that included retro-memories of "Johnny Quest," "Star Trek," and "The Jetson's." As for his music tastes, his soul was often soothed by the listening highlights of "The Association," "Emerson, Lake & Palmer," "Electric Light Orchestra," "Elton John," and anything Motown! Yet, of all the things that brought him the most joy and happiness, Gary would tell you that they didn't involve "things." His greatest passion in life was all about family,…especially his daughter, Alexandra. She was truly the light of his life and the wind beneath his wings. Her warmth and smile could always make a difference,…and often did. Gone far too soon from our presence, Gary leaves a storehouse of wonderful memories for all those to share who were blessed to know him,…in whatever walk of life that drew them together. He's transcended from being that of a family member or friend, to that of a Guardian Angel. His hugs will now come from Heaven,…and be felt in the warmth of each reflection bestowed. He will be missed immensely and loved eternally. Gary was the loving father of Alexandra. Beloved husband of Teresa, and stepson of Judie Swanson. Dear brother of Florence Bass, Guy (Debbie) Swanson, Kemmy Parisi, Grant (Kathy) Swanson, the late Lori Vinette, and step-siblings, David Rosenboom and Lori Tomasko. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. A Memorial Visitation for Gary will be held on Sunday, January 12th from 1-4pm at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 ½ Mile Rd) in Warren. Memorial donations, in Gary's name, are appreciated in support of his daughter to the Alexandra Swanson College Fund. Please share memories of Gary at his memory book.
