February 12, 1930 – November 13, 2024
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Don Halter, who passed away unexpectedly at his home in Waldorf, Maryland, on November 13, 2024, at the age of 94.
Don was born on February 12, 1930, in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, to Ethel and Elgin Halter. He is survived by his three children, Donna Knott (Donald), Kevin Halter (Sandy), and Eric Halter (Mary Beth); seven grandchildren, Renee, CJ, Nathan, Emily, Justin, Austin, and Kristin; twelve great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife of nearly 62 years, Marie Halter; his brothers Mason, Lou, and Doug; his great-grandchild Joey.
Don proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. His military journey began aboard an amphibious dock landing ship (LSD) before advancing to submarine school in New London, Connecticut. As a skilled navigator and periscope operator on a diesel submarine, Don played a vital role in his crew's success. Known for his exceptional violin playing and his legendary coffee-making skills—despite never drinking coffee himself—Don uplifted all those around him.
It was during his time in New London that Don met the love of his life, Marie Morth, at a USO dance hosted by the YMCA. Their romance blossomed over long conversations and memorable evenings together, eventually leading to a marriage that spanned nearly 62 years. Their union was a testament to enduring love and partnership.
After his military service, Don devoted his career to education, teaching mathematics and inspiring students at Thomas Chambliss (TC) Williams High School in Alexandria, VA. A lifelong learner and philosopher, Don’s favorite word, "Providence," reflected his deep gratitude for life's blessings.
In the years following Don’s retirement, he and Marie once again pursued a path of service to their country through the local chapter of the DAV (Disabled American Veterans). Don volunteered his time driving residents of the Charlotte Hall Veterans Home to their medical appointments at various facilities in the Washington area. Although not a disabled veteran himself, Don supported Marie, a disabled veteran, in the various positions of leadership she held in the local DAV chapter. Don and Marie also dedicated a significant amount of their time volunteering in any way they could at the Maryland Veterans Memorial Museum in Newburg, Maryland.
Also an avid bowler, Don pursued his passion for the sport well into his final days.
Don leaves behind a legacy of love and commitment. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, teacher, and friend. Don’s impact on those who knew him will never be forgotten.
A Veterans Funeral Service will be held on December 4, 2024 at 10:30 AM at the Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery, 11301 Crain Hwy, Cheltenham, Maryland 20623. Please arrive early to find parking and the location of the service that will be begin on schedule.
