GASTON - Mildred Benedict Lawson, age 77, passed away peacefully at home Monday, July 25, 2011. She was a ten year survivor of breast cancer that was never in remission. Funeral services will be held Thursday, 2:00 p.m., at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, West Columbia Chapel, 820 W Dunbar Rd, West Columbia, 29170. Interment will follow in Southland Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home chapel.
Mildred is survived by her Husband, David and six children, David Lawson Jr., Sandra Lawson, Stephen Lawson, Scott Lawson, Carol Zdan and Susan Lawson Shuster. She has two brothers; Lee and Bert Benedict in Knoxville, TN. She leaves behind many Grandchildren and Great- Grandchildren.
Mildred was born in Binghamton, NY, but lived much of her pre-teen years in Greenville, SC. She later lived in Oak Ridge, TN and Knoxville, TN where she met her husband, David. They lived together in Ohio, New Jersey, Illinois and Connecticut before moving to Sandy Run, SC. They would celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on October 1, 2011.
Mildred had degrees in Occupational Therapy and Psychology, and Master’s Degrees in Marriage and Family Therapy and Social Work. She was a Marriage and Family Counselor in Trumbull, CT before retiring and moving to SC.
Mildred was a former cellist in the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra and Knoxville Symphony Orchestra. Her hobbies included Quilting, Sewing and Knitting.
Mildred was an active member of the LMC Cancer Support Group. The family appreciates the care given to her by Oncologist, Fred Kudrik, her caregiver, Denise Mosier and especially to daughter, Sandra, who cared for her around the clock during her final days.
