Robert Elton West

Robert E. West passed away peacefully at his home in Suffolk, VA on February 23, 2024, at the age of 85. Bob is preceded by the love of his life of 63 years, his wife Joann, son Wayne, and son-in-law Greg Rudiger. Left to cherish his memory are daughters Lisa Rudiger (David), Lynne (Kenny) Pearson, sons Rob (Elany), Gary (Vikki), & Donald (Jennifer), daughter-in-law Rebecca, adopted son Eddie (Bobbi-Jo), 12 grandchildren {Stephen (Amy), Rachel (Alexandria), Joshua (Kristin), Matthew, Daniel, Jade (Kearyn), Cali (Nick), Gabrielle (MJ), Thomas, Serena (Stephen), Heaven, & Jarrett}, and 9 great grandchildren {Stephen Jr., Elizabeth, Jack, McKayla, Grayson, Tiffany, Robert, Niko, & Riley}, along with other family and friends. Bob, affectionately known by his family and friends as “Bitchen’ Bob” or “Big Ugly”, served 25 years in the United States Navy retiring as an E9 Master Chief. He was also retired from Dominion Power and Smithfield Packing Co. Bob volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America, was a member of the DAV Chapter 26, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. When Bob moved from Virginia Beach to a beautiful neighborhood in Suffolk, it was just to be closer to work. Never realizing how close he would become with new friends, that became family for the next 33 years. When the garage door was open, you always knew he was ready to offer a cold beverage, a helping hand, or just some neighborly advice. In conversation, he would always make sure to let them know that the grass had to be cut at 3.5 inches. Although some would have debated with him that it was 3.0 inches, and after further research concluded that maybe the big guy was right after all. Bob also enjoyed spending time at his home-away-from-home in Snug Harbor (NC) where family and friends have shared fun times and fond memories. Experiencing the joys of being on the boat, having a line in the water, and surrounded by loved ones. Bob’s kindness and generosity will forever resonate in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. For those closest to him, they may also hear his booming voice resonating as he ran a tight ship and knew exactly how things should be done. “Fair Winds and Following Seas” In lieu of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice in Bob’s memory or Bob’s favored charities; St. Jude or Wounded Warriors. A visitation for Bob will be held Friday, March 8, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Rosewood-Kellum Funeral Home, 601 N Witchduck Rd, Virginia Beach, Virginia 23462. Memorial service and graveside committal will take place at 10:00 AM Saturday, March 9, 2024, at Rosewood Memorial Park.
