Robert Macon Hodges

R. Macon Hodges passed away on August 29, 2023 at the age of 86 in Suffolk, Virginia. He now breathes freely as he joins his heavenly father. Macon is survived by his wife of 66 years, Audrey “Hope” Hodges, daughter Debbie Hodges, daughter Jan Henderson, son-n-law Jim Henderson, son Robert Macon Hodges, Jr. and daughter-n-law Carol Hodges. Grandchildren include: Courtney Ward, Amy Harris, Andrew Henderson, Robert Macon Hodges, III, Ashley Stallings; and great grandchildren Kennedie Ward, Lincoln Ward, Wilder Harris, Lennon Harris and Addison Stallings.
Macon was preceded in death by his parents Wilbur Robert Hodges, Agnes Haddock Hodges Pehle, and his brother Dalton Hodges.
Born in Greenville, NC on July 8, 1937, Macon had a love for learning and adventure that included: flying small airplanes and ultimately earning his commercial pilot’s license, becoming a flight instructor, sailing boats, navigating by the stars, and playing the guitar. Other hobbies were camping with family, ham radio operation and woodworking.
Macon spent his entire career at Hall Hodges Company in Norfolk, VA; starting as a draftsman in 1956 and working up to Vice President until his retirement in 2005. Early in his career he also designed and drew residential house plans.
Macon loved his family, but he had a special fondness for his disabled daughter, Debbie. He loved her unconditionally and spent his life advocating for special needs children. Macon also was involved in local civic activities.
The graveside service will be held at Rosewood Kellum on Witchduck Road in Virginia Beach at 10:00am on Wednesday, September 6, 2023. Friends and family are welcome.
The family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in lieu of flowers or other gifts.
