AUX SOINS DE
Smith & Williams Funeral Home/Kempsville
Mary F. Matthews “Frankie”, 85, went peacefully to be with the Lord on June 12, 2011 surrounded by her family. She was born on August 17, 1925 in Roanoke, Virginia, the daughter of the late Russell and Lillian Powell. Mary was a charter member of Community United Methodist Church. She enjoyed her flower garden, sewing and crocheting, but Mary’s greatest pleasure was her family and especially cooking for them; her meals were her gifts to her family. Mary was a mall walker at Greenbrier Mall and developed many special friendships with the other walkers. She took great pride in her neighborhood and enjoyed giving her neighbors home baked yeast rolls every Christmas. She lived life with a positive outlook and saw the good around her. For the past year she lived at Atlantic Shores in her own apartment enjoying a new adventure and making new friends. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 67 years, Willie D. Matthews and daughter, Brenda Diane Matthews.
Cherishing her memory are her daughters: Becky Dawson and husband Jack of Chesapeake, and Kim Jordan and husband, Ron of Virginia Beach; her beloved grandchildren, Lauren Sion and husband Mike, Amanda Brown and husband Steven, and Katelyn Rose Jordan and other loving relatives.
The family would like to thank the nurses and medical staff on the 4th floor at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital for all of the love and care given to their mom.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 from 6:00 – 7:00 PM in Smith and Williams Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, June 16, 2011 at 11:00 AM in Forest Lawn Cemetery on Granby Street in Norfolk.
