Margaret Celeste Schumann Pittman of Victoria passed away on Friday, September 22, 2017 at the age of 87. She was born to Anton Frank Schumann, Sr. and Augusta Raab Schumann on August 30, 1930 at the family home on Red River Street in Victoria.
Margaret is survived by her son, Les Pittman and daughter-in-law, Sandy Pittman; three grandchildren and their spouses—Tricia Lee Pittman; Kyle and Alice Pittman; and Jared Pittman and Leah Laben; and seven great grandchildren--Zoe Pittman, Zaida Meiser, Ellie Pittman, Caroline Pittman. Clark Laben-Pittman, Linus Laben-Pittman, and Warner Laben-Pittman; her brothers, Tony Schumann, Bob Schumann, and Jim Schumann; family-by-choice, Linda and Daryl Koliba, a large extended family, and numerous friends.
She was married to Emmett Pittman for 66 years before his death in February 2017. She was also preceded in death by her son Darrell Pittman, daughter-in-law Paula Girt Pittman; her parents; and her sisters Dorothy Kickendahl, Lorene Adcock, and Gladys Leita.
Margaret attended Juan Linn and Mitchell Elementary Schools and Patti Welder Junior and Senior High Schools, graduating in 1948. She worked as a bookkeeper at Stockbauer & Zeplin Buick (1948 to 1951). While working at Stockbauer and Zeplin, she met Emmett Pittman. After dating for several years, they were married on January 22, 1951 at Our Lady of Lourdes Rectory. They had two children, Les Pittman and Darrell Pittman (who passed away in 1979 as the result of a motorcycle accident). After the birth of her children, Margaret became a full-time homemaker. She also served as Den Mother in her sons’ Cub Scout activities. When her children were grown, she returned to work as a bookkeeper at Wilson Supply Company (1976 to 1981).
Like many children born in 1930, Margaret experienced many changes during her life. She recalled the coming of modern conveniences that made the job of a wife and mother easier—the automatic clothes washer, clothes dryer, freezer, electric sewing machine, electric mixer, and obtaining a driver’s license.
Margaret was a charter member of Our Lady of Victory Church and the OLV Altar Society. She was an avid knitter, making many afghan throws over the years. Her hobbies were playing 42 dominoes and super-canasta…and she loved to win. The challenge of working jig-saw puzzles, Sudoku, and crossword puzzles filled many of her hours. Margaret enjoyed traveling, reading books on travel, and looking at maps of far away places. Margaret, Emmett, and a number of couples, had an informal social group known as the Sewing Club for many years. She also received her 1,000-hour Award from DeTar Hospital for serving as a volunteer.
In her later years, Margaret and Emmett lived at Copperfield Village in Victoria, before moving to the Carriage Inn Community in Bryan, TX.
Visitation will be held at Rosewood Funeral Chapels from 5 to 7:00 pm, Thursday, September 28. Margaret’s Life Celebration and Prayer Service will be held on Friday, September 29 at 1:30 pm at Rosewood Funeral Chapels, with burial to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Tricia Pittman, Zoe Pittman, Daryl Koliba, Rudy Toerck, Gerald Adcock, Scott Schumann, Russell Weaver, and Gabe Weaver. Honorary Pallbearers will be Kyle Pittman, Jared Pittman, Tony Schumann, Bob Schumann, Jim Schumann, and Rick Pittman.
