Joe G. Barrera, our beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather/great-grandfather “Popo” passed away peacefully on Friday, the 11th of October 2024, at the age of 80, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on the 7th of October 1944 in Corpus Christi to Jose V. Barrera and Concepcion Gutierrez Garza.
In November 1966, Joe married his longtime love, Yolanda Delgado. Their 57-year marriage was a testament to love, partnership and shared values. Together, they raised their four daughters, Rosalinda (John) Ginzler of Nashua, New Hampshire, Grace (Mark) Werckle of San Antonio, Emily Barrera of San Antonio, Correna Lacy of Victoria and were blessed with ten grandchildren; three great grandchildren and three more on the way. He is also survived by his sister Angelita (Pete) Rios of Pasadena and two brothers, Arturo Barrera of Houston and Juan M. Garza (Sarah) of Katy.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Rosalinda Garza, Maria Elena Garza, and brother, Frank Barrera.
Joe was in the construction business for many years after he served his country in the U.S. Navy. Joe was an avid athlete in many sports. His love for sports was reflected in his participation in Semi-Pro Baseball, Basketball, Flag Football, Softball and Golf.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o’clock until seven o’clock in the evening on Thursday the 17th of October at Rosewood Funeral Chapels. The funeral service is at the First United Methodist Church at eleven o’clock on Friday the 18th of October with Pastor Amanda Banda. Interment in the Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery in Corpus Christi with full military honors will be at two o’clock in the afternoon.
Honoring Mr. Barrera as pallbearers will be Joe Rey Barrera, Benjamin Werckle, Darrian Lacy, Donavan Sanders, Dakhylan Sanders, Chelsea Barrera-Lacy, Carrie Barrera-Lacy, Courtney Barrera-Lacy and Auggie Woodruff.
