Durwood Rudolph (Woody) Hill was born February 2, 1931 in Corsicana, Texas to Hazel Grace Penn Hill and John Henry Hill. He moved to San Antonio, Texas in 1943 and graduated from Breckenridge High School in 1949. He served as apprenticeship with the Southern Pacific Railroad. He was called to duty in the Army in 1952 and served his time in Korea as an American Advisor to the Korean Army. He was involved in the prisoner exchange in Pan Moon Jom (38th parallel) before he was discharged in 1954 and returned to San Antonio, Texas. He married Cloetta Smith in July, 1955. They have on son Bart and daughter-in-law, Tami and one granddaughter Kayle Faye Hill, and Mr. Hill has one sister, Barbara Johnston and her husband, J.D. of San Antonio, TX and many nieces and nephews.. Woody was transferred to Houston, and served there until he was promoted to Assistant Master Car repair and returned to the San Antonio division where he served until December of 1972. He was promoted to Assistant Terminal Superintendent on the Cotton Belt Railroad in Pine Bluff, AR. In 1973 he left the railroad and moved to Victoria to serve as Plant Manager of Safety Railway Service, a new CMC company that repaired and built railroad cars where he retired as Vice President and General Manager. He played the guitar, was a Bluegrass Fan, enjoyed spending time at the bay in Rockport, playing tennis, playing “42” and bridge.
Mr. Hill passed away on Monday, January 24, 2011 at the age of 79.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 25, 2011 from 5-7 PM at Rosewood Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at the Baptist Temple with Rev. J.V. Helms officiating. Interment will follow in Memory Gardens Cemetery with full military honors under the auspices of the Victoria Veterans Council.
