Born in Brighton England July 16th 1931, Vivien passed away quietly March 24 2023 at Mount St Mary’s Care Home Victoria BC. Predeceased by her husband John Davies, sister Gloria and brother Harvey. Vivien is survived by her son Mark, granddaughter Ambre and four great-granddaughters (Mercury, Summer, Sadie and Hanna).
Vivien first came to Canada with her first husband John Wilkinson in the mid 1950’s. Her first teaching assignment was at a one-room school in a small town in Saskatchewan. After one shocking and gruelling Prairie winter, they fled to the warmer civilized climate of Victoria, Vancouver Is. Vivien spent the remainder of her career on the Saanich Peninsula teaching at both Claremont High and Parkland Secondary. There she taught PE, English and Civilization until her retirement in 1993.
Remarrying in 1968 to John Davies, the family moved to a small hobby farm in Deep Cove, North Saanich. Here they found much joy and respite in gardening, sheep tending, and relaxing in the various little enclaves around the property. Together they created a setting for their many varied events and eclectic group of friends. Eventually, the idyllic property was too much to manage and they moved to nearby Sidney.
Vivien was an active and athletic woman her entire life, even playing table tennis into her late 80’s. For many years she was involved as both a player and organizer in field hockey and tennis. Vivien eventually turned her sports passion fully to tennis, where she organized and played in many tournaments in and around Victoria. She also sat on the Board of Directors Tennis BC for 10 years. One of her tennis highlights was representing Tennis Canada in the Senior Worlds in Turkey in 2001.
Vivien’s energy and interests were boundless, from teaching, to sports, hosting parties, attending classical concerts, art exhibits, and travelling. She gave much of her time to many worthy social and political causes. She especially enjoyed her gatherings with the book/hiking group of friends known as RABS. She will be fondly remembered for her fairness, kindness, and for her desire to make the world a better place. The Family extends a special thanks to the staff at Mount St. Mary’s, for their kindness and care they gave mum in her last years. A much loved mother, grandma, Gigi and friend, Vivien shall be missed.
