Vic designed a house for me and my late husband, David, in Toronto. A very special, astute and caring man with a superb sense of style which was as practical as it was beautiful. We met up again when we moved to Victoria. The fondest memories of this always smiling, creative man. He is missed.

I have fond memories of Mr. Chang Kue tolerating having several school aged girls in his home for social gatherings with Gem. He had a gentle charm and welcoming demeanour. Thinking of you all.

Dear Aunt Pam, Marty and Gem

I was so sad to hear of the passing of Uncle Victor. It has been so many years since I last saw you both on one of your trips to Toronto.

One thing I always remember about Uncle Vic was his infectious smile. Aunt Pam and Uncle Vic were such good friends with my mom and dad (Kathy and Arthur King) and as little as I was I remember the visits and the times they spent together. 

So sorry for your loss. Deepest sympathy from my Mom Kathy, and sister Cheryl.

I have searched for a week and tonight was happy to find this photo which I thought was long lost.  I snapped this in front of my parent's house in Victoria Village area in Toronto.  In 1979-1980, My mom, Alice Chang-Kue,  simply wanted a dishwasher installed in the kitchen of the family 3 bedroom bungalow which they had  purchased in 1961.   My dad, Raymond,  sought advice from his architect brother, who lived only 15 minutes away in his magnificent Don Mills home.  Uncle Vic, upon inspection of our house, announced that he was going beyond a dishwasher install and instead had a grand plan to thoroughly modernize my parent's 3 bedroom bungalow.   Mom was aghast.  Dad was kinda interested.  Dad won. The final outcome was expensive.  The kitchen was converted into a grand front entrance room and the walkout basement rec room was transformed into a  spacious, modern family kitchen with direct walkout to a custom back yard patio-BBQ cedar deck. A  new laundry room-storage wing was also added .  Uncle Victor's unique  design touches were very evident.   My parents moved to a condo in 2011 and after very  minimum staging, I put the house up for sale.  Some potential buyers were dazzled by the home's modern  design.  Bidding on the house was enthusiastic and the house on 63 Anewen Drive sold easily.  During the renovations being done in 1980,  I had come  in from my home in Winnipeg to visit my parents and was taken aback by the scope of the construction activities.  Uncle Victor came by one day and I grabbed the opportunity to have him pose  in front of his sign planted on the front lawn.  To me, this  unique  image which I really wanted to share here, evokes the personality and verve of Victor Chang-Kue, Architect.

We were visiting a museum I think and when we turned around … uncle Victor had donned the pilgrim gear!! Bwhahaha!

In 1992 aunty Pam and uncle Victor invited a clueless 19 year old niece to visit them, get to know the family and see Canada.  I got to know uncle Victor and lets say I was more than intimidated by his enquiry about my 5 year plan. But his warmth, sense of humour, strength, dignity and love is something that I cherish and Im grateful to have gotten to know!!

Dear Aunty Pam , Marty ,Gem and family ,

We were so saddened to hear the news of Uncle Victor’s passing. 
Uncle Victor and Aunty Pam have played a major role in our lives here in Canada. From the day we landed they were like our adoptive Mom and Dad. They were always supporting , guiding us and being our best cheerleaders.  That we are always truly grateful for. 
We will always remember Uncle Victor’s positive attitude and his great sense of humour. 
We are happy that we managed to finally make a trip to Victoria this past summer.  We really enjoyed the quality time we spend with Uncle Victor , Aunty Pam and Marty. Uncle Victor was his usual self and in great spirits giving Marty advice on where to take us for fish and chips. 
We will truly miss you Uncle Victor and will treasure the fond memories we have of you.

It was with great sadness that we heard of Victor's passing.
We remember him well as a great human being, talented and caring, with many facets and always with such great passion. We will always remember his eternal optimism. Tennis was his great love. He loved all sports.

A talented architect who left a legacy of beautiful homes in the GTA to remember him by. He designed a beautiful renovation to our home. We still enjoy it to this day.

He will be missed.

On hearing the sad news of Victor's passing, I felt an instant sorrow. I have known Victor for many years  in S.A. and reconnected with him in Toronto back in the early 70s.

Uncle Victor and his 2 brothers (Dennis & Raymond) were members of the Marigold Dance Band in Johannesburg, South Africa.   Uncle Dennis'  best buddy, a talented jazz pianist  from out of town, was the band's pianist.    His name:  Jack Mason (Front row, left). 

Victor it has been a long run since we met in at varsity in 1953. You were the man of experience since you had been around for quite a while before! You taught me me so much by association, except for that smoking part!   I do remember that confidence that you exuded especially  when making presentations and speeches. 
 That   artistic streak t hat made your career so successful. We do 
 remember that dark red wall in your room ,that surprised us ,in 
   Mobray house and how those walls of silhouettes were  the hallmarks of our " residence".
  We we  re so proud w he n you won  that  top prize at architectural school and how we celebrated with the drinking, that you also taught us, though you would have probably denied that.
 Then how can we forget  those weekends watching the Maple Leafs  with  the Sunday soup  with Pam and Margaret and  being so excited  and actually telling the players what to do, even if only  on TV!
 So we will miss  you!

Visits with Uncle Vic & Aunt Pam were so few and far between; however, each visit was a highlight .  We were so pleased that Marty drove them down  to visit us in Stratford during, I think, Uncle Vic's last trip to Toronto in July 2018.  As usual, we sat down for a group family photo.  Just looking at his smile  reminds me of how  fortunate I was to have had  such a wonderful, thoughtful and clever man in my life.

Growing up, my fondest memories, like most in our family was of our Christmas eve gatherings at Malabar Place. It was always the highlight of our youth, sitting on the large sectional by the silver tree, waiting for our names to be called. I also remember watching Leafs games with him in the basement, where often his famous "fillaaaayyy" would echo across the room when there was a bad play or someone scored against us. 

Uncle Victor always encouraged us to do well in school, and would love to talk about music. He was always respected by everyone in the family, like an elder whom the family would seek advice or go to with a quesiton. 

In the later years, we would always try to have time to meet-up with when Auntie Pam and he would stop in Toronto; one thing that always struck me about him was how sharp his memory always was, and how he could remember fine details, like names and places at the drop of a hat. 

Uncle Victor will be missed, and although we will cannot join the family in BC this week, please know we will be thinking of you all and celebrating his life with you, smiling and laughing with those happy memories that will always be there for us!

    Please accept our sincere condolences for the passing of Victor. Ever since I met him in Capetown in 1956 we developed an everlasting friendship. He was likable, friendly with a great sense of humor. He will be remembered and sadly missed.

My very young Uncle Victor was a member of probably the first local Chinese Jazz and Dance Band in Johannesburg:  The Marigolds Dance Band.

My Uncle Victor was 15 years old when I was born.   I recall him teaching  me a some rude , mischievous antics (e.g. Here Kenny, pull on my little finger and hear what happens ?!!).  Like a caring older brother he put in a lot of effort in my early school days in guiding me to be educated and indeed he set a good example by going away to University.  I greeted him enthusiastically at the train station when he came home at the end of each college year.  He never failed to produce a book gift for me - no Hardy Boys stuff - it was more science and chemistry books signed by "Uncle Victor".  His one book on Home Chemistry Experiments  would probably be banned to-day.  One experiment taught me how to make a contact explosive which did explode in my face despite warnings/cautions.  Years later I told him about this event and he seemed bemused.  Overall he was glad when I followed his example and became the second Chang-Kue to go to UniversityéCollege.  I miss my Uncle Victor.

Some of our fondest childhood memories include spending Christmas at your house, looking at your fascinating furniture and Uncle Victor always making us smile.  I can still hear his voice saying, “Hip hop hooray!” and singing at our birthdays.   I am happy that my kids were also fortunate enough to spend some time with him during your visits here. Dear Pam
I am saddened to hear that Vic died. I have such very fond memories of him not only as our creative, smart, personally involved and caring architect at 334 Keewatin and a few terrific ideas for our house in Victoria, but as a lovely human being. Vic valued family enormously - you could see that in our conversations and also in the way he designed houses. I know he will be greatly missed by you and all his family. My condolences.

      Our strongest memory of Victor is standing with him on the sideline of the girls' soccer games.  It was often freezing cold but he was there in full support.  We are sad to know he has passed away, but we know your life long memories will keep him close by.
