Tony was born in 1945 in London, England, and grew up with loving parents Kenneth and Gwendolen James and sister Elizabeth. He studied at the University of Manitoba and at the University of British Columbia, attaining a Masters in Architecture and Masters in Urban Planning respectively.
As a registered architect he had a lengthy career during which he worked on large and small projects of every description, receiving many professional and personal accolades. He attained LEED environmental design certification, and his buildings would continue to reflect his respect for the natural world, as well as for the people who would make use of them. He always strove to create designs that embodied simplicity and beauty. Over many years he worked for then partnered in successive firms finally leading him to create Continuum Architecture.
Outside of work he pursued visual art - primarily detailed pencil drawings of horses in a wide variety of impressions and situations. He also enjoyed music, in particular blues but also rock'n'roll, and some pop music. He had a lifelong love of horses and horseriding. He made many good friends at home, at work and while travelling. He chose his travel destinations for the riding, usually through wilderness; or else to experience urban life and the architecture of cities.
During a short but acute illness he was cared for and protected by his ex-wife Nancy, with whom he had remained close friends. His condition having deteriorated he chose to undergo a medically assisted death on October 1st, 2024. Nancy, as well as his son Christopher, attended his passing which transpired peacefully, painlessly and lovingly. Thanks to Nancy's help as well as the efforts and good wishes of his many friends and colleagues, the end of his life was filled with good will and remembrance and left little unresolved. We are grateful to have known him and will always remember his kindness.
Tony requested that any donations in memoriam should be made to the BCSPCA. We thank you.
