Ray is survived by his wife Corinne, daughter Lori Bacon (Dave), son Steve (Nicole), daughter in law Sally (Al), grandchildren Brett, Derek, Samantha, and Jake, and three great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son Doug.
Ray was born in Lampman, Saskatchewan and moved to Regina with his parents at a young age. He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 1952 and soon after started work with Shell Oil. Luckily for him (and all of us), his desk was placed directly across from his future wife Corinne. After two years of Ray’s dedicated pursuit, Corinne finally succumbed to his relentless charm and they went on a date. They married on June 29, 1957 and moved to Edmonton, where all three kids were born, then transferred to Calgary in 1968.
Ray had exhilarating and exciting careers in the oil patch including twenty years with Shell Oil and eleven years with Dome Petroleum, where he held offices of Vice President, Land and Funds, and Vice President, Frontier Lands & Japanese Business Relations. Following his career at Dome, and known as a determined negotiator, he founded his own consulting firm Maplesun Associates and continued making deals and working with several firms.
Many of Ray’s early years in Calgary were dedicated to volunteer coaching with the Calgary South YMCA Barracuda Swim Club and later with the Calgary Patriots, a team he founded with great success.
On one of Ray’s early business trips (1964) to Victoria BC, he visited and fell in love with Piers Island. He purchased a lot and every summer became a family adventure while Ray would constantly build and make improvements to his island paradise. His love for the coast led to Ray and Corinne retiring and moving to their Victoria acreage full time in 1994. Ray truly loved living on the “farm”, making wine, hosting pizza parties, sipping martinis, and most importantly welcoming one and all.
Ray’s family is very appreciative of the attentive and compassionate care he received at Island View Care Home during the last few months of his life.
No flowers by request. If desired, make a donation to a cat (animal) shelter of your choice. A family celebration will be held at a later date.
Raise your glass in a toast to Ray.
