After a brief illness, our loving mother Margaret Joan Penner died on June 24, 2022 in Victoria. Joan is survived by her two sisters Mary and Alice as well as her children Garth (Barbara), Bob (Pat), Kathi (Ron) and Mark (Lorena), 9 grandchildren and 4 (and counting) great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her daughter Wendy (Jim), brother Bud, sister Hazel and in 2015 by her devoted husband of 64 years Harold Unger Penner.
Her journey started in Morris, Manitoba on Jan 6,1929. Joan graduated from St. Boniface Hospital nursing in 1948 and started work in the hospital where she would eventually capture the heart of the man she would marry. A family soon followed and Joan’s busy parenting years were in Winkler and Winnipeg. She moved to Victoria in 1979 to start her life on the West Coast. Joan adapted to her new life and kept her love of curling that she acquired in her youth in southern Manitoba. In Victoria, she became an active member of the St. Michael’s University School Parents Auxiliary as well as volunteering at the Canadian Cancer Society, the Hospital Auxiliary and the Cadboro Bay United Church. She enjoyed traveling with Harold visiting family and friends in Canada, the United States, Chile, Cuba, and Vanuatu. During those years, Joan made and maintained a great many lasting and deep friendships. Throughout her life, her sustaining values remained her deep love of family and her faith. Her love and support throughout the years will be missed. The times she spent with each of us and those who knew and loved her, along with our memories of Joan, will continue to be a source of strength and guidance as we each continue on our own journeys.
The family will always be appreciative of the care given by Crista of Comfort Keepers. There will be a small service for immediate family on July 5,2022.
