Hugh Martin Gough died peacefully June 26th, 2022 at the age of 95 years in Victoria, BC. He was pre-deceased by Marianne, his wife of 60+ years and by his sister, Helen Roberts. He is survived by his children Alison (Mike) Cownden, Fiona Gough, Jonathan (Judy) Gough, Rosamund (Allan) Russell and Simon (Lilie) Gough. Also by his grandchildren Liane Cownden, Scott (Jennifer) Cownden, Tracie Cownden, Stephanie (Dave) Empey, Julie Russell, Amy Russell, Jeffrey Russell, Adam Gough, Jordan Gough and Kaito Gough and by his great-grandchildren and by his brother Jim (Joy) Gough and sister Anne Kotze.
Martin was born in Leeds, Yorkshire. WWII shaped his formative years, during which he attended Leeds Grammar School. He captained the shooting team and manned the Fire Watch.
At Jesus College, Cambridge, Martin studied medicine as well as learning to play the organ, an abiding musical interest, and rowed on the Cambridge rowing team. He met Marianne Platts at Sheffield Women's Hospital where she was a midwife and he was a houseman. After marrying and qualifying with the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Martin, Marianne and 6-month old Alison boarded the Empress of England and emigrated to Canada.
Martin and Marianne lived first in Kingston, Ontario, where Fiona was born and then settled in Victoria, BC where Jonathan, Rosamund and Simon were born.
Martin had a fulfilling career in medicine. He was a keen golfer and astute bridge player. He and Marianne enjoyed travelling and went on many extended trips after Martin retired. They made a point of visiting many European cathedrals to listen to their organ music, especially if there was a Bach program. Martin was a reserved English gentleman with a dry wit. Undoubtedly his greatest pleasure was his family.
If you wish, you may make a contribution to the Victoria Hospice Society in Martin's name. Dad would be equally pleased if you simply took some extra time to spend with your family.
