C., Marianne (Greg) Rachwalski of Vernon, B.C., Chris (Johanna) Grant of Winnipeg M.B.: twelve grandchildren: Patrick Nelson, Lindsay, Andrew (Ali), Katie (Adam) and Matt Scott-Moncrieff, John (Megan), Mike and Jenny Weston, Laura and Grant Rachwalski, Nathan and Levi Grant; three great grandchildren: Sloane Scott-Moncrieff, Sam and Zoey Weston. She was also predeceased by several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Kit was born in Edmonton, Alberta, but lived most of her life in B.C. She grew up in Ladner and Vancouver, where she graduated from St. Paul’s School of Nursing in 1943. Her first posting was to Invermere, B.C. where she became reunited with Patrick Grant, a friend from her Catholic youth group in Vancouver. They were married on February 28th, 1945 and spent 64 happy years together. Soon after their marriage, Pat’s career in education took them to Rossland, followed by moves to Penticton, Cranbrook and Qualicum Beach. Their final move was to Vernon in 1969, where Kit continued her nursing career working for several local doctors. In retirement, she enjoyed gardening, fishing, reading, knitting, playing bridge, and travelling south for the winter months with Pat.
Kit was a dedicated mother and grandmother. She kept in close touch with everyone, always remembering special occasions. Her greatest joy was her family, and she especially loved having everyone home together in the summer and at Christmas. Kit was an amazing cook. Her recipes continue to be enjoyed by her children and grandchildren. Her pies and cookies were legendary.
Kit suffered a serious brain injury in 2003, and since then has shown great courage, strength and resilience. Kit was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church, and her strong faith has carried her through her whole life. Kit leaves a legacy of generosity, kindness and love.
The family would like extend a special thank you to caregiver, Karin Ketterer, and the staff at the Gateby Care Centre for their long-standing, compassionate care provided to Kit. We would also like to thank the care-givers from Nurse Next Door for their more recent care.
A Memorial Mass will be held at St. James Catholic Church, Vernon, B. C. at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 21st, 2013, followed by a reception at the Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Covenant House, 575 Drake Street, Vancouver, B. C. V6B 4K8, 604-638-4438. [email protected].
