Long time Ventura family practice physician Richard N. Puls, MD passed away quietly on August 25, 2011 from injuries sustained from a sudden brain aneurism. He was surrounded in his final days by the love and care of his family and many friends.
Dr. Puls was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on May 13, 1934 to parents Rudolph and Charlotte Puls. He was a graduate of Walnut Hills High School of Cincinnati in 1952 and graduated cum laude from Wabash College, Crawfordsville, Ind. in 1956. While at Wabash, he served as president of the senior class, president of Sigma Chi and had a track record in the 440 that held for 10 years after his graduation. He then graduated from the University of Cincinnati Medical School in 1960. After an internship in Cincinnati, he came to the Ventura County General Hospital in 1962 for his residency. He was a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice, served as Chief of Staff at the Community Memorial Hospital in 1989, and was President of the Ventura County Medical Association. He served the community for 46 years before retiring in Sept. 2010.
Richard was beloved by his family, his many patients, friends and colleagues. He will be fondly remembered for his great sense of humor and for his ability to find a nick-name for everyone. Richard touched so many lives and his legacy and memory will live on forever.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dolly; children Adrienne Leigh Jones, Allyson Scott Puls-Dharmadji and husband Toto of Jakarta, Indonesia, Grady Puls and wife Petra of Ventura, CA; grandchildren Jade Asmara (13), Kier Serai (11), Taj Adair (8) Dharmadji, and Ian Hunter Puls (5).
Visitation will take place Wednesday, August 31st, 4:00 P.M. until 7:30 P.M. at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, Sept. 2nd, 11:00 A.M. at Ventura Community Presbyterian Church, 1555 Poli Street, Ventura, where he served as an elder and usher.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in memory of Dr. Richard Puls to the Ventura County chapters of the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association.
