Today, August 16th, is my mom and dad's Wedding Anniversary - the first one my mom has had to experience without my dad. I know how hard this must be for her! But I also know my dad IS beaming down TODAY and everyday letting his light shine on my mom and passing on his love to her! In his own way he is sending that one white rose to my mom and telling her, as he always did... One white rose; true love knows! We miss you dad!

I rarely get sick but was sick this past week with a very bad cold. Funny, I thought about Dr. Puls and how he would tell me he was glad I didn't get sick very often but always enjoyed seeing me. I probably would have made an appointment with him just to see him even though this cold was manageable on my own. I miss him!!!

Richard (or Dick as I called him) was my cousin, but several years older than me. His mother Charlotte was my mother Alma's half sister. Dick's birthday was May 12th, same as my mother's.
Until second grade, we lived in Cincinnati in the Pleasant Ridge area at the corner of Ridge and Gloss. Uncle Rudy, Aunt Charlotte and Cousin Dick lived on E. Woodmont Ave., not too far away. I remember playing baseball and basketball in the street with Dick and neighbors and looking out the second floor window of his house, which our house on Gloss didn't have. (Later, Dick's parents  moved to Ridgewood Ave and my parents moved way over on the west side of Cincinnati, in the Bevis area, near Mt. Healthy. We didn't see each other as much, but our parents still got together quite often. Somewhere between the ages of 8 to 10 as I remember, Dick's parents went on vacation to Niagara Falls, taking Dick and me with them. I can still remember going on the “Maid of the Mist” boat ride with them.
Once or twice, Dick took me on his newspaper delivery route. Because I helped him, I was given a 50 cent piece. It was the first money I earned and I still have it as a memento.
I rarely saw Dick as we got older and he went off to college. When he graduated from Wabash College in Indiana, I attended the commencement exercise. It was a memorable event and encouraged me when I later went to the University of Cincinnati.
I remember going to Dick and Dolly's wedding, a very lovely event. Over the years I was able to visit them once or twice on Business trips to the west coast. Unfortunately, we were always too far apart to socialize to any greater extent. 
As a footnote, when my wife Judy and I yearly returned to Cincinnati on vacation visits we always made it a point to visit Dick's parents. It was sad when they passed away, as it is equally with Dick's passing. He will always remembered as a wonderful cousin and role model.

Richard was my cousin; his dad was my mom's older brother.  He was 10 years older than me, so I remember him when I was very young and he was at Wabash College. His dad and my mom were born at 433 Warner St. in Cincinnati, Ohio, and hi mom and dad lived in Norwood, a suburb of Cincnnati.  His dad, Rudy used to let me "work" in his drug store when I was 7 or 8, and would give me something from the store as pay.  Cousin Dick would let me ride with him to deliver perscriptions to customers.

I got interested in finding ancestors this year, and started an Ancestory.com family tree.  I tried to connect with him this last summer by phone, but didn't succeed.  Today, I found this obituary, and it makes me very sad that we missed talking one more time.  

In 1975, I took my son, and went to visit my family in Cincinnati.  I stayed with Dick's parents, Uncle Rudy and Aunt Charlotte.  We stayed in Dick's room, which had been left just like it was when he left home for college over 20 years previously. 

I will use the obituary to update my family tree.  Also, I will send the news to my cousin, Keith Kirkpatrick in Florida.  His mom, Dick's youngest Aunt, Jeanne Kirkpatrick, is still alive in Capitola CA.  Dick's cousin, Judy Theile Shea is still alive in Pensylvania.  With Dick's passing, we are the at the outer branch of the tree, for our generation.

I miss you dad! My thoughts are with you today and always. Today, is one of the BAD days - when I wish more than anything, I could hear your voice, see you smile and have a hug! Love, Allyson

I WAS A CLASSMATE OF DICK AT WABASH COLLEGE IN THE CLASS OF 1956. WHILE I HAVE NOT SEEN MUCH OF HIM OVER THE PAST 55 YEARS I ALWAYS REMENBERED HIM AS THE FIRST CLASS MAN HE WAS. IN COLLEGE HE WAS ONE OF THOSE WHO SEEMED TO HAVE IT ALL -- GOOD LOOKING, PERSONABLE, AN OUTSTANDING SCHOLAR AND ATHLETE. I KNOW HE HAD SET SOME TRACK RECORDS WHICH ENDURED A LONG TIME.
IN READING THE TRIBUTES, IT IS CLEAR TO SEE THAT THOSE QUALITIES ENDURED TO HIS PROFESSIONAL LIFE. TO PUT IT IN "WABASH SPEAK" HE TRULY WAS "SOME LITTLE GIANT" AND DEEPLY MISSED.

Dear Mom, 
Below are the words that I read at Dad's funeral. Dad loved you very much mom - and so do I! We are so blessed to have had Dad - such an extraordinary man - in our lives. I love you!

My dad liked to sing; and my mom just adored his beautiful tenor voice. Sometimes a phrase in a conversation or a word heard on the tv would remind them of a song they used to sing in their High School choir and the two of them would just start singing together, even harmonizing - it was sweet!

My dad always sang to wake us up in the morning. He did this for as long as I can remember. On a rare occasion he'd wake us up with a soothing song like Morning Has Broken. But most days dad would stand in the doorway to our bedroom and sing: SCHOOL DAYS, SCHOOL DAYS, DEAR OLD FASHIONED RULE DAYS, READING AND WRITING AND ARITHMETIC, TAUGHT TO THE TUNE OF A HICKORY STICK... And he'd add TIME TO GET UP, TIME TO GET UP!

Oh, there were many mornings (especially in our teenage years) when we would just want to throw a pillow at him so he'd knock-it-off! I think my brother Grady actually did hurl a few pillows at him - but all with love of course! We loved his morning ritual - it was something special our dad always did and it became a sort of tradition. Grady and I even find ourselves waking up our own kids every once in awhile by singing that same song.

It comforts me now to know that my own 3 children just recently had some quality time with their Grandpa. My family and I were all just here from Indonesia for a vacation - just this last June and July. On one of those July mornings my dad, once again, woke me up with his SCHOOL DAYS song! (How old am I?) I had an early morning appointment that day to renew my license, and my dad didn't want me to be late! He drove me to the DMV and waited in line with me when my appointment number was called. I can remember looking around at that time and noticing all the parents in there with their teenage kids - moms and dads with their sons and daughters - probably all 16-year-olds getting their drivers licenses for the very first time. And there I was - a 48 year old woman standing in line at the DMV with her dad! It was too cute! And then later, when I was just about to take the written test, I stood there and took a few deep breaths and then looked over at my dad - and there he was, giving me a big, beautiful grin and two thumbs up! Can't you just picture that smile!?

That was my dad - always encouraging; always there for us; always wanting to help in any way that he could. He was incredibly kind and generous! He was a man of integrity who lived his life loving his family, caring for his patients and being a true gentleman.

I learned from you Dad. I laughed with you. I listened to you. I leaned on you. And most of all Dad - I loved you! I feel so proud, and so blessed to have been able to call you my father! God bless you Dad!

Dr Puls~You became a regular occurring name in our family from the time I turned 16, when you hired my mom Marilyn as your nurse.  She brought along with her 5 daughters.  You were only 31 then and I thought you were so young, and handsome.  You have been there throughout all of our lives, with open arms and a sense of calming comfort, especially in stressful times.  I smile when I think of your smile & funny dry sense of humor when you would greet us.  You delivered 3 of my 4 babies (vacation prevented 1 delivery), you were there through marriages, divorces, late nite calls for sick children, and then as our children grew you've been there for them and their children.  Our family is so saddened by your young and sudden passing.  It is clear to see you have served a wonderful purpose on this earth and those lives that you have touched have been blessed.

I look long and hard for any physisian my husband and I see, often firing them upon my first visit to there office. I was at the end of my rope and Dr. Puls was a shot in the dark, and I hit the bullseye first time around. He was knowledgable, keeping up on the lastest medical findings. He was also patient beyond belief. Always taking the time to answer every question, and never writing off a complaint. Experienced, knowledgable, with no God complex. I cried when he retired, he will be sorely missed.

I never had the privilege of meeting Dr. Puls, but I was fortunate to know of him through the wonderful stories and memories shared by his son Grady. To hear Grady speak of his father and family with such heartfelt love, devotion and admiration is a testament to the kind of man Dr. Puls was and is. My heart goes out to the entire family. May your love for each other and your memories of him carry you through this difficult time.

I had a special relationship with Dr. Puls from the early days of his practice when he had his offices in downtown Ventura. My Mother, Marilyn Wolever, was his office nurse for over 25 years. Consequently, he was a daily part of our lives until Mom retired.

Dr. Puls and I shared a similar sense of humor and we would light heartedly banter back and forth. It was a game we always played and I loved it.

I don't remember what his "name" was for me in the early years but, after my marriage, he always greeted me saying "Here's the Freie" (pronounced "Fry"). Even after my divorce and remarriage he still called me that.

The last time I saw him was at the Top Hat in downtown Ventura. It was lunch time and he was dropping in for a burger. He still had that quiet, understated smile and twinkle in his eyes. I will miss you, Dr. Richard N. Puls. You will always be a special part of my life.

It is with great sadness to know of Dick's recent passing.  He was a mentor and friend to me for many years, and his quiet stoicism and reassuring words were always a source of inspiration and reassurance to me.  I particularly enjoyed his spartan but sage advice when we shared lunches together at the CMH doctors' lounge.  His advice to "watch your overhead" was heeded and invaluable to me, as was his example as a patient advocate who really cared about his patients.  I will miss him dearly but never forget his influence upon me.

When my family and I moved to Ventura a little over thirty years ago, our good fortune landed us next door to the Puls family. They immediately treated us not only as neighbors but also as family. And to make things even more interesting, shortly after we moved to the neighborhood, Dollie and my wife Joanie discovered that their grand mothers were first cousins. This was an amazing coincidence since Joanie’s family is from New Jersey and Pennsylvania and Dollie’s from Ohio, and since we moved to Ventura from Texas ... So Dick and I became instant cousins-in law. We also learned that Dick, Dollie, Joanie and I shared the same wedding anniversary date.

Over the years I have enjoyed my relationship with Dick, not only as a neighbor, a relative, a friend, a physician colleague, but also as a mentor.

Yes, a mentor.

Dick was already an established and well-regarded family physician in 1981. I was a young starting neurosurgeon who needed guidance and handholding. Not necessarily in neurosurgical matters-I had a great group of partners to help me with neurosurgical issues, but in general. Dick provided me with a sounding board; a keen judgment; and when necessary, a critical but loving perspective that helped me make better decisions. 

I always knew where Dick stood. He had the integrity we expect in our physicians, mentors and leaders. Dick did not make popular choices; rather he made the right choices. I remember more than once asking him tough ethical questions about various medically related issues. He would listen; reflect carefully; ask a few probing questions; stay quiet for a while; and then start formulating an answer. I always found his answers well reasoned, well balanced and wise.

When I faced issues regarding local or even state medical politics, I always relied on Dick. In fact, he showed me the ropes, and in some ways paved the way for me.

Dick served admirably as a president of the Ventura County Medical Society. I followed a few years later. And I relied heavily on his counsel during my tenure. 

I also know that Dick was a mentor to many others.

On a more personal level, I would like to leave you with one image: Dick in the swimming pool.

When we traveled to Bali to attend Allyson’s wedding, we arrived to the beautiful and enchanted Serai hotel the afternoon before the actual ceremony. After checking in, we found out that Allyson and the ladies were doing what ladies do to get ready and that Dick was enjoying himself in the pool. Indeed he had positioned himself in the center of the pool talking to and visiting with the guests and everyone else. He was so happy. You should have seen the smile on his face … Before long: we started thinking of him as the pool greeter! 

I think that when I die and if I am fortunate to go to heaven, I will find Dick in a breathtakingly beautiful celestial pool greeting us, newcomers.

     I was saddened to hear of Dr. Puls passing. I was his patient for 11 years.  May you all have peace and comfort during this time. God bless you.

I have heard many stories about ‘in law’ not just in my country but anywhere including USA.  We all knew some of the out come of those in law’s stories. 

I had the opportunity to be alone with the future ‘in Law’ when I took “Grandpa” to Yolandas, to ask his blessing to marry Allyson, we started our conversation about sports and I had to agreed that his St Louis Rams was better then my San Diego Chargers, although in 1994, San Diego Chargers went to Super Bowl, so it was not easy to accept this but for Allyson, Yes Rams were better!

With his ‘famous’ finger was pointing toward me and his words was,” Toto, Allyson has always been my Apple, she always bring joy and surprises when we see her! So please take a good care of my Apple and you have my blessing! 

I lost my father when I was 17, and I had the same called when I was in Coronado, my father was in coma so my sister and I flew back home and he died with the same blood aneurism too, so I never had a father figure until I met ‘Grandpa’. Grandpa and I had plenty things in commons, not just our Sports, I used to call him from Indonesia while we were watching the Lakers games,  we loved our trip to Cosco, Vons, Albertson or Frank’s butcher to find the best cut. Grandpa was a generous man and always think for others, he made sure we are cared and the most important thing, he never back down with what he believed what is best for us.

Over 15 years Allyson and I have been together and he always said, “Toto, you are ok!” he never missed it, even when I took him to watch the NBA All Stars week end last February, I was happy, when he said, the same words, ‘you are ok Toto!’ before I flew back home.

We had another opportunity to meet again last summer, before we depart on our road trip to Canada, with that finger, he said, ‘Be careful Toto, you have my Apple and 3 baby Apples!’  After I drove all the way thru up and down the coast when we reached back in Jackson street, he waited for us to get home, and the first thing he said to me when I saw him was, “…. Toto, I am proud of you!” I never tried to prove anything to him, except I do adore my Allyson and our 3 Stinkers! And will do anything to make them be the best as they can be, the way Grandpa did to his family.  Grandpa will always be in my heart, for being who he was and for what he was to his family. I love you Grandpa, thank you for allowing me to be part of your life into your Puls family and I will truly miss him., and please say Hello to my Dad, when you meet up there!

Dr. Puls was my doctor for 15 years until he retired, and I looked forward to my doctor appointments for those years.  He always made me laugh, and I felt that he genuinely cared about me.  I am grateful for that, and for his knowledge, as he helped me a great deal over the years.  He was the best doctor ever!  I will miss you Dr. Puls~

Dr. Puls delivered 2 of my three daughters in 75 and 78. C-Sections. Took care of their colds through their growing years and school time immunizations. The girls are grown with their own children and remember also with a great fondness his gentle touch and soothing presence. One daughter in particular still speaks highly of "the" Family Dr. who made all at ease with every visit for any reason we were there. We are deeply saddened and will truely miss this wonderful Man. There was and is no other like him. Our best wishes and empathy to the Puls Clan who morn the loss of Father, Husband and Grandparent. He was the best Dr. We ever had or ever knew and we arn't kidding.

My deepest sympathy and condolences to the Puls family on the passing of a classic family doctor who really cared for his patients. Edward Banman, MD

   On behalf of my family, I'd like to extend our deepest condolences to the family of Dr. Puls. At the same time, we would like to express our enduring gratitude to the doctor who cared for our family for decades and to the man who was a cherished neighbor as well as father to our closest childhood friends. We are thankful to his wife, Dolly, and his children Adrienne, Allyson and Grady for so generously sharing his time with all of us.
   With only a handful of exceptions, every phone conversation with my mother following Dr. Puls' retirement last year included a mention of how much she missed him, how she hadn't found a decent doctor since him, and how she would never find a doctor as good him - as caring, as available, as reliable. This was no exaggeration on her part and without exception I wholeheartedly agreed! Regrettably, there was unequivocally no chance of finding a doctor like him! There just aren't anymore doctors around who take calls on their home phones, who run down the street to make emergency "house calls," or who pay personal visits to people in hospitals not even under their care! Dr. Puls was that kind of doctor - always there for my late father who was not his patient. And he checked in on me more than once while I was hospitalized during my college years.
   On behalf of myself, I am thankful for having been perhaps the last generation to be under the compassionate care of a "family doctor" who viewed his patients as individuals who were part of families he knew well and as members of a community he loved and served faithfully for almost half of a century. 
   I had no idea Dr. Puls was already past 70 when he took out some stitches for me during a visit home a number of years ago - sharp as ever, that characteristically dry sense of humor more than intact, and that familiar greeting, "Well, if it isn't Missy!" I would then ask about Allyson as I always did, sit back, and watch his face brighten and his little smirk turn into a big proud smile! I will remember those times in his office with fondness - even those most embarrassing moments as a teenager being examined by my best friend's dad - a doctor whose name was a homophone for pulse, as I would later in life tell my unbelieving friends!
   I hope it is a comfort for the family to know that Dr. Puls was highly respected and valued in our neighborhood as well as our community. I know the love he had for all of you will continue to live in your hearts in all your days ahead. May God bless you and keep you close as you mourn his sudden passing. Dear Mrs. Puls, Adrienne and Allyson,
I just heard from my mom today that she attended Dr Puls' funeral this morning. What a shock to hear, as I knew he had just retired after being our family physician for as long as I can remember. I remember him as being a kind and thoughtful doctor. I have wonderful memories of running Cross Country and Track with Adrienne who was one of my best friends at Buena  and some of those runs with her still find their way into my nighttime dreams, where I can, of course, still run fast. Well those days are long gone, but I am grateful for the memories I have of your family. I didn't know Allyson too well in high school but I do remember her great sense of humor during some of those long runs. May you be blessed with peace through these next months and years as you adjust to life on earth without Richard and look forward to a wonderful reunion with him in heaven. I was  blessed to have Richard as a dear friend for over 20 years until I moved to Louisiana in 1994. He was a wonderful friend and a fine physician.  I will never forget the night I was in CMH waiting for back surgery in the AM, when here comes Richard with some of my favorite adult beverage to help get through the night.  He was one of the most caring people I have ever met.
   The world is a better place because Richard Puls was there.  My condolences to Dolly and the rest of the family

 I am so saddened to learn of the too early passing of this fine man, this wonderful doctor, this kind human being. I always knew that I would be heard when I was with him, and that he would give weight to my questions and concerns.  He also treated my young sons with kindness, respect and care.  We were always greeted with a smile and a bright twinkle in his eye, and it made going to the doctor a much more pleasant experience.  I found great comfort in his voice, his manner, his laugh and his knowledge. I appreciated every visit with him and felt better physically, mentally, emotionally and best of all spiritually as he would walk me back down the hall to say goodbye.
My prayers, condolence and love to his family.  Thank you for sharing him with us!  We are better for it.

I could always count on Dr. Puls for a warm and happy greeting which included his full name for me: “Kathy Treiberg Dickinson”.  I will miss hearing those words from him so much.  Greg and I will never forget the great fun we all had during Toto and Allyson’s weddings in Jakarta and Bali. I always dreaded going to the doctor before meeting Dr Puls. When I was referred to him, I was told he had a great bedside manner - truer words could not be spoken. He had a great sense of humor, a kind smile, and a wealth of information. I was never hesitant about speaking openly with him, as I knew he only wanted the best for his patients. I have no doubt this translated into his personal life as well, and my sincerest condolences are with his family for the loss of a great doctor, and great man. He will be missed.

You were definitely the best of the best. When no one else could help me, you were there. I was probably one of your more difficult patients in that not having any legs made it so hard to get up on the table etc. But
You never gave up on me. I loved having an old fashioned doctor. They don't make them like you anymore. My deepest sympathy to your wife, children

Grandpa I Miss you, You are the Best Grandpa anyone could ever have because you're the only Grandpa I have ever had. Dolly, Adrienne, Allyson and Grady: I am so saddened by the news of Doctor's passing. I admired him so much.  There was never a better doctor or boss to work with. I was so sorry to hear the news of Dr. Puls' passing today. He delivered both me in 1975 and my brother in 1976 and was our family's physician for 30+ years -- well after my brother & I moved away for college my parents continued to see him as their physician. He will always be fondly remembered by the Nichols' family. Sending his wife and family my thoughts and prayers.

Dr. Pulse was my Dr. for the last 10 years, and i was so sad when he finally retired, i remember he used to tell me, i'm worried for you(i never took my blood pressure medicine)he used to say that i was the worst patient he ever had and then he would smile,  my husband and i will miss Dr. Pulse but know that he is in gods hands. I was completely shocked to hear of the passing of Dr. Puls. Recently I was in Ventura for the funeral of a High School/ College friend and had a conversation with Grady about his dad and his recent retirement. Grady's face and smile lit up when he talked about his dad. I have had the privilege of being a patient of Dr. Puls and a friend to his son for some time. I'm so sorry to hear of Dr. Puls' passing. He was such a gentleman - I worked at CMH for 30 years and when I'd see him in the hallways, I would greet him and he'd always just say my name with a smile. My father was a medical colleague of his, and they worked for many years together at CMH before dad passed away last summer. Dr. Puls will be missed in our community and remembered by all whose lives he touched.

I have never felt more comfortable with any Dr.  He was a jewel!  He delivered my second daughter in 1972 and in the delivery room told me he did not like my choice of names for the baby-I changed it!  After removing a palm tree thorn that was imbedded in my other daughter's leg he informed her that not only was there a tooth fairy but a thorn fairy as well.  We'll all  miss him. I'm heartbroken to hear of Dr. Puls’ passing. He delivered me and my little brother, and has taken care of my entire family for the past 30+ years. He is just one of my favorite people on the planet. He always had a smile and a chuckle… even in our more stern moments (i.e., the “teenaged years”). Now that I think of it, I quite looked forward to getting sick sometimes... because then I had a reason to visit my Dr. Puls! So few people these days get to have such a relationship with their family doctor… I am touched to have been one of the lucky few. Wishing love, solace and happy memories to his family.

Dr. Puls was my doctor for the 7 years before he retired.  He always had a smirk on his face when I'd tell him of my adventures.  He was a good, kind man.

The Last time I saw Dr. Puls was in Ralphs about 1 year ago. He was waiting in line as I ran up to him and hugged him w/ all my might. I think I scared him. He delivered me on April 10th, 1971. That was the first time he saved my life. I was not breathing for quiet sometime. He did not give up til I took my first breath. He always called me Martha Mitchell instead of Martha Michelle, he said because he liked that name better. Then again in 1987 I went in for a routine physical he immediately notice something wrong. He diagnosed me w/ ITP.  Yes saving my life again. Then almost 24 years later from my Birthday, on April 6th, 1995 he helped deliver my son Gabriel Sundholm. He helped celebrate the best day in my life... I Love You Doctor Puls.. I will remember you Forever.....XOXO

There were a lot of things that I loved about grandpa and here are a few things. I loved the way he said disney channel and milk. I liked the way we always fought for the tv at home. I   liked the way he laughed. I had a great time with him on the bali and Jogjakarta trip over the summer. He was the best grandpa ever.

Dear Mrs. Puls and Family,
I and my family are deeply saddened to hear of Dr. Puls passing. Dr. Puls was my doctor from the age of 18 until he retired 37 years later.He delivered my first daughter in 1974, my second in 1984 and took care of my son when he was born in 1991. He took great care with my husband, my two son-in-laws and then my two grandchildren. He was always there for us whenever we needed his care. I could always count on him to come into the room with a smile and a laugh. It was also fun to watch how the ladies (his staff) and he got along.  He was so proud of his kids and wife and then so happy when he had grandchildren. My family and I have such happy memories of Dr. Puls and hope your happy memories will help you through this difficult time. We will truly miss him.

Dear Allyson and family,
Words can never express how we feel when someone we love, admire care about, passes away. Your father was a wonderful man, husband, father, grandfather and doctor. That is evident by all the people who have written so far, as well as those I have known over the years who were his patients.  I always felt so good to know that he was the doctor to many of my clients.  Allyson, so sorry for your loss.  Just know that he is continuing to watch over you and your family and he will be there in spirit! All my love to you and everyone.

They don't make them like Dick Puls anymore.  A true unique individual. He was kind, yet firm with his patients. I worked with him at the two hospitals off and on for 45 years and learned to appreciate his frankness, and dry sense of humor. He did a fine job as Chief of Staff at CMH and was well respected. A Grandpa is someone you will look up too. Through out your whole life, no matter how tall or old you get you will always look up to them for guidance. Grandpa I want you to know that for the best of almost 14 years of my life, I got to know a person as extraordinary as you. Even though maybe I didn’t see you that often, or talk to you enough you were in my thoughts and prayers every night, and still will be. I need you to realize that wherever you may be now you will always stay in all of our hearts. Just think about it as starting a new segment of your amazing life that you’ve had. I know that you’re in a happier place watching down on all of us. I also want to thank you for all the times you have made me laugh and smile. I can’t think of one time that you have failed to do this. I think that the most memorable moments for us is that one time you hid my dolly up in the fireplace. It scared me so badly but it made me laugh so hard. I will hold that memory with me forever and ever. Thank you for all the special times we’ve spent together. I don’t know how to thank you enough for everything you’ve given me. I love you so much Grandpa. May god be with you wherever you are.

Oh my gosh, this is shocking news!!  God bless Dr. Puls, he was a wonderful man/doctor/friend of ours for over 20+ yrs.  He chose a later retirement date, and it brings me to tears that he won't be able to keep to the plans he had after retirement.  He always spoke so highly of high daughters, in fact last time we saw him - that is exactly what he talked about, his daughters and wife.  When my husband got cancer, he knew just the right words with the right embraces and encouragement.  Dear family, I am so saddened by this, so so sad.  Our love and prayers are with all of you during this difficult time.

My deepest and most sincere sympathy on the passing of your father.

Dr. Puls was my Dr from my early 20s until my late 30s when he retired last year.  I seeked him out after my own Dr from since I was a child retired.  I wanted to stick with the same old school type Dr as that is what I loved and felt comfortable with.  I remember coming in to his office soon after I had got my belly button pierced.  I had to have a physical and I remember him looking at the belly button ring and saying "What in the world?!?"  And then a couple years later, he saw my tattoo and said "What is with this!?" (Always with a smirk of course!)  He reminded me of my own father which is what I really loved about him.  He had read in the paper that I was married and when I came in soon after my wedding for an appt with him, he congratulated me and then said "He better be really nice to you!"  Not long after I was married, my husband was diagnosed with cancer.  I came into his office to talk to him about this, he put his head down and shook his head.  He told me how unfair this was and how sorry he was.  Such a stoic man but so caring and kind. When he retired last year I cried for days.  I was so happy for him but I realized how important he was in my life.  (I think my husband thought I was nuts to cry over his retirement.)  So now of course, his death takes me by surprise.  My heart is very sad.  I will miss his stories about his lovely wife, his wonderful children and grandchildren.  I know if I am this sad over just knowing him for 15-20 years, his family must be besides themselves.  He was the best fo the best.  I will miss him dearly!

Thank You Dr. Puls for all the years of wonderful care you gave to our family. You were always there for us, whether it was delivering the children or caring for the injuries or illnesses. We were fortunate to have been your patients for 35 years. I remember the old days, when you would meet us in the emergency room on weekends to tend to a broken arm for Jay or when Cindy was attacked by the dog. We always knew it was going to be O.K. when you walked through that door. You always followed up when you had to sent us to a specialist, and was always there to calm our fears. We were so fortunate to have such a caring compassionate doctor for all those years. We have not yet or probaly never will find another Dr. to meet those standards.  Yours are very hard shoes to fill. To your family: How fortunate you were to have such a good person in your lifes. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dr Puls was our family physician from 1968 -2003.He delivered our daughter Martha under difficult circumstances and saved her life. And then again at the start of her highschool year he diagnosed her with a condition called itp and once again because of his early diagnosies she was spared  she now has three beautiful children of her own and lives in Santa Barbara. I was so shocked to hear of Dr. Puls passing. He was my doctor for the past 10+ years. I was so sad for him to retire because I knew I would never find another caring,compassionate, wonderful doctor to make me always walk out with a smile on my face. However the loss if him saddens me so much more. To the family I am truly sorry for your loss. Dr. Puls was my doctor as a child in the late 60's early 70's.  He was always so kind.  He will be missed in the community.

Was very sad when  I heard about Dr.  PULS. He was mine and my moms dr. We loved him  so much  nice man and always had a smile on his face. Even when we were feeling down we walked out with a smile on our face. not to mention he had a wonderful staff. Was sad for us when he retired but happy for him. And now very sad. Dr. Puls was a great person. He was my doctor ever since he delivered me on Nov. 30 1980 until he retired. He always new how to cheer me up when I was not feeling to hot. Dr Puls passing has left me without words to express the sadness our family is feeling right now. He has been my Dr since he took over for Dr Daily in the 60's. He pierced my ears as a teen. Made house calls for our family and visited my grandfather in the 70's when no other Dr in Ventura would. He delivered my daughters in 
1978 and 1984. And from what he told me, my last, Kari Ann, was his last delivery. He got Bill and I through some very bad times with my brain surgery in 2000. I was sad when you retired and now sadder you have left this world completely. I know God will take care of you and all those patients  that are waiting for you in the well designed waiting room with its yellow chairs and glass tables and ofcourse that card game on Tuesdays.
