George Henry Snyder, 85, of Ventura, passed away on January 9, 2014 in a local hospital. He was born June 16, 1928 in Springfield, Illinois. George graduated from Earlham College in Indiana and then earned Master’s Degrees from Denver University and the University of Nebraska.
He taught junior and senior high school English in Indiana and Ohio before moving to Ventura. George taught at Cabrillo, then a Junior High School and Buena High School until his retirement in 1984. During his time at Cabrillo and Buena George served as department head, was twice selected for NDEA Fellowships at UC Berkley and Nebraska University, and in 1970 was chosen as one of the one hundred English teachers in the state of California to be designated Master Teacher, to help plan a revised outline of instruction for California schools.
George took great pleasure and pride in his family and their activities and had a lifelong interest in sports and writing. He compiled fifteen volumes of novels, stories, poetry and plays.
He and his wife Mary loved to travel and had many adventures in Spain, Africa and Europe.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 61and a half years, Mary; sons, Steven of Ventura, California, Devon of Newport Beach, California and Douglas of Boise, Idaho; daughter and son-in-law Susan and Dennis Montoya of Ventura, California and six grandchildren, Jenn, Margo and Max Montoya of Ventura, Morgan Montoya and his wife Amanda of Simi Valley, Jessie and Tomas Snyder of Ventura.
A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, January 26, 2014, 2:00 P.M. at the Ted Mayr Funeral Home, 3150 Loma Vista Road, Ventura.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity of Ventura County.
