During the Second World War, Stephen fled to China with his parents and siblings. As a patriotic young man, he went to Kunming and joined the Chinese Nationalist Government to fight against the Japanese. The Chinese Nationalist Government selected and sent him to the U.S.A to be an interpreter for the Chinese Nationalist Air Force pilots and military war time technical staff. He returned to Hong Kong after the Second World War. He worked with the British Air Force on the construction of the mini airport, and transitioned to the Public Works Department of the Hong Kong Government to supervise building construction until 1977. For the sake of the children, Stephen and the family immigrated to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in 1977. He was employed by the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation for 6 years working in Edmonton, Alberta. At age 62, he retired and rejoined the family in Vancouver until he passed away.
Stephen was married to Christy Ho Yeung King Ching on January 7, 1950 in Hong Kong at the St. Paul’s Anglican Church where Stephen was baptised to be Christ’s follower. His wife, Christy passed away on October 21, 2012. He is survived by his four children, Eva, Wanda, Sheila, Kendall and two grandchildren, Jordan and Kaylin. He was a dedicated husband, caring father, a good provider for his family, and a kind and gentle grandfather. He was well loved by his family and much liked by everyone who met him, as he habitually put others’ welfare ahead of himself. He was always a gentleman, polite and generous with not only people who knew him, but also strangers. He lived a rich and abundant life.
