Michael was born in 1935 in Mussoorie, India to Stanley and Lily Farlie. His formative years were spent in India and the United Kingdom before moving to Hong Kong in the 1970s. It was there that he met his beloved wife, Vivian, with whom he shared 38 years of unwavering love and companionship. In 1997, Michael and Vivian retired and moved to Vancouver, Canada.
Michael had a distinguished career spanning over 50 years. He proudly served his country in the British Army from 1954-1956 as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery, based in Osnabrück, Germany. He received a Queen's Commission and was posted to a Light Anti Aircraft Regiment and later an 81mm Mortar Battery.
In recognition of his services to the shipping industry, Michael was awarded an MBE (Ordinary Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) by the British Government on behalf of HM the Queen in June 1996. The honour recognized his role in establishing Hong Kong's autonomous shipping register and campaigning against piracy in Southeast Asia.
Michael was also the Founding President of the International Shipowners Alliance of Canada from 2004-2006 and previously served as the Managing Director of the Hong Kong Shipowners Association for 13 years from 1984-1997. Earlier in his career, he worked as the P&O Group's Middle East Representative and as an owner's agent for British India Steam Navigation.
Michael will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was predeceased by his parents, siblings Betty and Pam, and stepson Johan. He is survived by his loving wife Vivian, stepson Douglas and his wife Joey, granddaughter Charlotte, and stepdaughter-in-law Betty.
Michael lived a full life dedicated to his career, family and country. He will be greatly missed but fondly remembered for his kindness, leadership and generosity. Per his wishes, Michael's ashes will be scattered at sea. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Michael's memory to the charity of one's choice. Michael will be forever in our hearts.
