March 8, 1932-December 26, 2022
John MacKechnie MacLeod was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba March 8, 1932. After WWII ended his family settled in Vancouver where he attended various schools and graduated from Prince of Wales High School in 1950. He then attended UBC, joined the Phi Delta Gamma fraternity and graduated from the civil engineering program in 1956. Immediately after graduation, he married his sweetheart, Jean Hickernell, and they moved to Victoria where he worked for the BC Power Commission as well as being an active member of the Victoria Jaycees. Six years and three children later, the Provincial Government founded BC Hydro and moved many of their employees, including John, back to Vancouver to staff the new organization. He was a cub pack leader at Shaughnessy Heights United Church as well as being part of a curling league for many years, and once he retired from BC Hydro in 1987, he also volunteered at Canuck Place. He continued to work after retirement, for two to three more years, managing a CIDA funded project with China, involving transfer of technology from Canadian electrical utilities. Retirement also gave him a chance to maintain the much loved family property at Chilliwack Lake, pursue and cultivate his love of fly fishing, try some new sports like golf and bike riding as well as to continue the work his father started on the family genealogy. He was predeceased by his wife, Jean in 2018 as well as his sister, Flora in 2021. He leaves behind a brother, Bob and four children; Susan (Ken), David (Betty), Cathy, Tim (Bahar), eight grandchildren; Taisha (Grant), Stuart (Catie), Thomas, Nicole (Aki), Michelle, Jaclyn (Steven), Olivia and Hailey, and five great grandchildren; Daniel, Isobella, Angus, Marshall and Loxley. He was a wonderful father and grandfather, and was very proud of the achievements of all of his family. A Celebration of Life will be held at Shaughnessy Heights United Church in the Main Hall (1550 West 33rd Ave, Vancouver) on Saturday, February 11, 2023 at 1 pm. Please use the office entrance. In lieu of flowers and for those who wish, donations to Canuck Place Children’s Hospice are gratefully accepted. Condolences and tributes can be sent to the family by visiting www.mountpleasantfuneral.com.
