I am saddened that we have lost such a good family friend but I am thankful that Jim is now at peace. My fondest and most prominent memories of Jim are at the Scottish/English gang gatherings (Robbie Burns night, Burke St fireworks and wild parties at Euclid and Poco where, as children, we would eavesdrop on the grownups). Jim would "freak me out" with his stare and regale us with stories (I'm not sure how many were true). I always envied Mum and Dad that they had such a wonderful friend in Jim as true friendship is hard to find. Anne, Samantha, Allison and family, please accept the heartfelt sympathy of my family and I. Sitting here in Dunbar with Anne and Maureen having just looked through the pictures of Jim and family. Although Jim and Anne moved to Vancouver when they where twenty one I have happy memories of your wedding, tricks with your finger Jim and all the laughs we had at Viewforth. You will be sadly missed by your family and friends but we all have special memories  of you.Thinking of you today.

There are hardly words to say what a great person Jim was. We love him always. I loved all the penguin jokes. And the tax-payer jokes. And the jokes. He was a loving friend, neighbour, a back-up father. When my family and I were having terrible struggles, he was a warm, funny, solid rock. Always. A man of few words, but every one of them precious. We will miss him so much. My deepest love and condolences to Anne, Sammy, Ali, Scott, Alvin, James, and William, who will miss him even more. Love, Shannon, Durrell and Anika

We miss you lots Jim.
You truly were a great friend, not only to Issy and I but, my entire family on our arrival to Canada. My parents Norman and Jean also thought the world of you. The rest is history, with both our new families growing up together for most just across the way.
You have left us with wonderful memories, not only in our many social gatherings, but the likes of our hectic drive down the Oregon Coast in two campers that were truly past their best, to several times to your favourite retreat the Pacific Sands in Long Beach. We never did make it again to the Ellison's cabin in Procter a new place that really took your fancy; it was near water - say no more!!
I'll personally miss our outings to art stores and checking out the art scene, I know it would have become routine seeing we both had the time in our retirements and sharing the same interests.
Not having your name pop up on the computer on a daily basis was the first sign of change, you did all you could to win your fight, it just wasn't to be. You are in a better place and out of pain. Sadly the Grandie's will miss out on all your stories - as we all will.

Uncle "Dim" I can't believe you are gone.  I have so many wonderful memories.  I have never forgotten the advise you gave me when I was a wee girl.  You told me that I need to get up everymorning early and enjoy the day, never to waste the day sleeping as life is too short.  I will miss the hugs and your humour. Auntie Anne, Sammy, Ally, Alvin, Scott, James and wee Willy...love you all so much.

We met in 1965 and became instant friends even though one was from Scotland and the other from England. Over the ensuing years our friendship became more like brothers, he was my confidant as I was his. Our families enjoyed many happy times and created many warm memories. Jim and I shared a number of road trips which were great fun. Many stories and probably many lies were told on these road trips but hold great memories. My heart goes out to Anne, Samantha and Allison and respective families in this time of sadness. I will dearly miss my friend who was the best friend a man can ever wish for. My friend "Plums" was taken way to soon.

I have a lot of wonderful memories of Uncle Jim, Auntie Anne, Sammy and Allison growing up, but I will never forget the day after my wedding.  Uncle Jim was teasing me, telling me that I would never remember any of the gifts we received.  I told him I sure would, so he challenged me to remember what Auntie Anne gave me for a shower gift.  When I told him it was plates and mugs with cookies on it, he huffed, got up and walked out.  A few minutes later, he came back in and handed me the matching cookie jar!!! (He also informed me that if I didn't know, I wouldn't have gotten the cookie jar!) God bless you Uncle Jim, you will be missed.  My heart is with you and the girls Auntie Anne. With a heavy heart I write this farewell to a man who definitely impacted my growing up. I have so many fond memories, but what I remember the most are those Saturday night visits when you and Anne would come over to the house and my geography lesson would start -for years I thought Ranchipur was the capital of India.  I know you are in a better place in fact I'm sure that you and Dad (Tommy McPhail) are sitting reading National Geographics and having a wee nip.

I love you all sooo much, Auntie Anne, Sammy, Allie.  I have a funny memory for you.  We were fishing on the rocks at Long Beach I think I was about 8 and for some reason Uncle Jim needed a pair of pants (trousers).  The only thing around were my Hawaiian pineapple shorts, and he got them on and wore them :-) I will always miss your kisses and your hugs full of love and your Unlce Jim smell (Old Spice, I think) ....love one of the spinners Kirsty, xo
