Ida Leona Van Horn

It is with our sadness, yet her joy, we announce our mother, IDA LEONA VAN HORN, passing from this life and graduating to glory. On March 18, 2024 mom left gently in her sleep at Cascade Gardens LTC in Burnaby, BC at the age of 93.

Ida was born June 20, 1930 in Yellowgrass, Saskatchewan to Olga (nee Miller) and Michael Patzwald, the fourth of five children: Julius, Elma, Donelda, Ida and Norma. Moving to different farming communities while growing up the family settled in Regina.

Mom pursued nursing and graduated from Grey Nuns in 1952. Beginning in Melville, Sask and many places in between mom landed in Vancouver, where most of her career was centred. While taking couples dance classes she met an instructor, our dad, Michael Archie Van Horn and they married in June of 1959.

First living in Vancouver’s west end, Daryle Michael was born in 1960. A move to east Vancouver saw the arrival of Rodney Steven in 1962 followed by Maureen Jacqueline in 1964. Ida stayed in that location four more years after the marriage ended in 1984. She moved to a Burnaby apartment bordering Central Park in 1988.

Mom’s final nursing position was at George Pearson LTC Centre and she retired in 1993.

Ida enjoyed years of extensive travel and adventures with Bob Ellis whom she’d met at the many dances she attended.

Up until a fall in late January 2023, mom lived a very spry and independent life. Several ups and downs affected her recovery at Burnaby General which lasted ten weeks.

A placement at Cascade Gardens in April required 24 hour care and lasted eleven months. In hospital and LTC mom had difficulty grasping why she was still here. Through devotions, prayer and benedictions she was reassured of His timeline.

We want to thank Burnaby General Hospital and Cascade Gardens for their exceptional care and commitment.

Ida is survived by:

-Sister Donelda of Red Deer, AB; Desiree (wife of Daryle); Edward (Dawn) Desmond and Ryker; Steven (Chris); Amanda; Rod (Diana); Felicity (Ryan) Wiseman; Dillon (Marina Meredith); Maureen (Carlos): Penunuri-Yepiz;Diego;Amaylia; and numerous, cousins, nieces and nephews.
