Floretta Madge Marlatt

Born in Vancouver at St. Paul’s Hospital, to parents Flora and Alex McEachern of Ontario, after they permanently moved from Ontario in 1918 to the west coast.

Flora was officially recognized and honoured as a Canadian Centennial Pioneer in 1967. Madge was very proud of her parents.

During her childhood, Madge and her family spent several years at various logging camps on the BC coast before settling on West Broadway, attending Model Elementary and King Edward Secondary, then obtaining her power machine certificate.

An accomplished seamstress, she pursued a career in interior design, notably with Davies Interiors; Exclusive Interiors; Teeporton Interiors; Chelsea Shop (20 years); and Preston’s Interiors.

After retiring at age 71, she found a further creative outlet at the Kerrisdale Seniors’ Centre, where she could be found most days of the week, volunteering in many capacities for 26 years. As well as writing poetry and articles for the Monarch Newsletter, she was famously known as the “Card Lady”, creating and selling greeting cards from recycled donations.

In 2017, she reluctantly sold her view condo on West 40th Avenue and moved to Clarendon Court. As her health deteriorated, she was transferred to Dr. Al Hogg Pavilion in White Rock in 2021. Many thanks to the caring staff who attentively looked after her.

Madge is survived by her only daughter, Janie Marlatt, of North Vancouver.
